So... calling it a 300ZX when it's not a 300ZX makes more sense than calling it by it's actual name (which in all actuality is likely just gonna be "Z")?
You're gonna sound like one of those people that calls the Z33 a 350ZX.
Agreed, seems more than rediculous to resurrect a name from a 55 year old movie.
57 for the movie, actually, John. (Says pedantic Mic, haha!) The name was taken/appropriated from the original Broadway musical in the mid-50s.
But ya, there's Nissan history in the name. First time the name Fairlady was used was in 1960 as the name of the SP212, a very cool little roadster....

...which was the predecessor to the car we colloquially know as the Datsun Roadster (SP/SPL, SR/SRL)....

...which also carried the name Fairlady through model year 1970, when the Fairlady Z (known in the USDM as the 240Z) was introduced.
So, now that the name "Nissan" has been standardized globally, why not call the new Z35 a "Fairlady Z" to keep in line with the rest of the Nissan "standardized", global offerings? Hahaha! Frankly though, no care, so long as the "Z" is in there, it's all good to me.
But how's this for a twist.... sometime around the early 201x's, Nissan brought back the "Datsun" name, albeit for a line of tiny cars (similar to kei cars) for global markets. Think they were going to phase it out again within the last couple of years but still... can you imagine (since we're all getting panties-in-a-bunch over the name ), what if they decided to name it the simple, yet strangely logical, "DATSUN Z"?

I mean IF they just call it Z I'll call it that, IF they add a number anywhere I'll ignore and call 300ZX, IF they call it Fairlady across the globe I'll probably call it that.
Funny but I call every Z by their number and don't include the Z except for the 300ZX.
While my enthusiasm for the new Z is only tepid, pending actual look-see/drive/when's the Nismo arrive? I will be glued to my cornpooter to watch the reveal. Interestingly, had a meeting with some honchos ON CAMPUS (that's a first) where I consult. I pushed the meeting back because they scheduled it for 3pm. Too close for comfort. Hahahaha.
Not sure if there's a separate thread yet for the new Z here. Guess I'll start one. I wanna see the reaction from this crowd. Think it ought to be fun.
Oh, you saw it here first. (Why yes, I've been known to disturb feces, why?)
