pioneer avic d1 install questions...
i have a 04 350z performance (no nav, no bose) and i ordered a pioneer avic d1 nav system to replace the stock HU which is double din. i was looking on crutchfield and they indicated that this unit doesn't fit the car. So i was wondering first off if anyone has installed a double din nav in their 350z and if they had any fitment issues. Also, has anyone had experience with the d1 unit becuz it's new and i haven't seen any display units at any of the local dealers. From what i've heard, it's essentially the same as the N2 except it cannot play dvds other than the nav ones. I was also considering the eclipse avn5435, which is double din with dvd/nav/cd, but i'm going with the pioneer cuz of the nav software and the ipod interface.
thanks in advance.

AVIC D1 chassis size = 7" x 4" x 6.5", there is no hideaway unit.
AVIC N2 =
Dimensions (Main Chassis): 7" x 2" x 6-1/2"
Dimensions (Hideaway Unit): 7-1/8" x 1-3/16" x 5-1/2"
Don't see why not - it's 7" deep, twice as high (double DIN) at 4" and just as wide.
Possibly call them up and see what they say.

Make sure you take a good look at that Ipod interface for the Pioneer. From what I've read it's really poor. It displays only 8 letters and doesn't allow you to seach or scan the drive very easy at all. I'm probably going to just use the RCA line level inputs and use an outside charger.

I got this reply back from Crutchfield.
Hello Paul, Thanks for shopping on the Crutchfield web site. You'll be glad to know the will be a perfect fit in the dash opening of your Nissan 350z. For another look, just point your browser at:

The center console removal instructions are tacted at the top of this formums page. It's pretty simple starting at the aft end and working forward.
I would alway recommend putting in a choke coil if the replacement unit doesn't ship with one. They're about $10 or so for one that will handle the power of this unit.

For about 400 more you can get the Eclipse AVN5495 which has a built in 30G HDD
plus the ability to play DVD's. The Avic-d1 doesn't play DVD's. The AVN5435 is about 200 more and it also plays DVD's. Just an option, the Pioneer is nice-just needs to play DVD's for it being in that price range.

I know the AVN5435 is out. It comes down to preference. I like Pioneer, but I was dissapointed when I found out the unit was not a dvd player also. I would like to get the Pioneer for my QX4, and the Eclipse for Z.

Avic D1 INSTALLED!!!!
WOW, that was the one of the most harrowing and satisfying experiences yet. It took me about 8 hours to do the install, mostly becuz i really didn't know what i was doing (i've never installed any sort of audio/nav unit before). I really thought the hard part was taking out the center console, boy was i wrong. Looking back i should have bought the harness kit, mounting kit, and master guide sheets from crutchfield. I finally got harnesses at bestbuy about 3 hours into the install, which made life so much easier. However, the most difficult task was putting everything back once i was done with all the wiring. It's all done now and it works great, i also put in the ipod adapter unit. I still need to do the GPS antenna (right now it's sitting on the trunk floor), freroute the ipod usb cable, and buy/make a faceplate for the unit as the opening is a good cm larger than the D1 all around. Anyways, here are the pics, enjoy...
