Default Guys with a 12 under the strut: Impressions please.

Hi all:

I'm getting ready to start the fab work on my under the strut box for a single 12 w6v2 by JL Audio.

Just wondering what peoples impressions are of 12's in the z, as far as loudness/clarity goes. I'm extremely experienced with car audio, however have not had a chance to hear 12's in the z.

Curious to hear your guys' take on it. I had a 10w7 on a 500/1 before and was not impressed at all. I'm baffled what to do.

My car has been under the knife for almost 3 weeks and I will be getting it back within the next couple days...hopefully late friday or early saturday. My installer made a custom box under the strut for a 12w7 and its being powered by a JL 1000/1 amp. There's a bunch of dynamat back there in the hatch area so i'll let ya know in a couple days how it sounds

A 12" is going to be tight - as in hard to fit (and nice sounding). The 12's I've seen have been tilted upwards and outwards from the center. 10" woofers will just barely leave enough room above and below for the mounting.

Right, understandably I'll have to fiberglass it in. THis is not a problem.

I have a 12" inverted under the strut and it sounds good. Not facing the back of the car like your asking but if you cant fit it that way then just place it under it facing up. Like this

btw: its not done yet incase your wondering

12s sound great in the car, provided they are a good woofer

I don't really know what to tell you, I mean...a good sub is gonna sound great in the car with the right enclosure, and I know you got that part covered

Jim, was looking forward to hearing from you. Are you mounting yours under the strut similir to the picture above? I can get the 12w6v2 really cheap...if i dont go that route I might get a xbl^2 driver. We'll see--I just dont want to be dissapointed again after my 10w7 fiasco. It was loud, yes...but clean? No.

Geez. I think you win for having the least amount of storage space.

I would love to hear that.

Honestly Ravi,

I would shy away from a W6.

Number one reason for me - It's JL, its played out (sorry MIA) and its only so-so of a driver (in my opinion). If you are spending the skrilla to get the custom box, get the "custom" driver to.

I am a firm believer in the XBL2 tech ... I had the pleasure of chillin' with Dan Wiggins and crew at CES this year and got some nice info from them. In fact, I looked at it for use in my projects ... but the powers at be here weren't too keep.

I'd suggest a XXX12 if you can grab one. One of my favorite drivers for an all-arounder ... plus it'll look nice in there. Just make sure to make that box DAMN strong

Here's a few pics of my install. You'll need to make a lowered floor board to make it fit. I'm sure you new that. Btw,the 2 12's sound awesome. Sound deadening is your friend!!!

What is the advantage/disadvantage/purpose for inverting subs? After my 6.5 Focal polyglass slims components are installed this weekend....and Audison amp...I'm focusing on a sub box for probably two 12's...!!! Would love to know more about inverted subs....it looks great!!

GQ why weren't you impressed with the JL10W7? are you in to SQ or SPL? I want to know because i was considering sticking a 8W7 in the back for some quality bass.

Ok:

Dan Wiggins is cool. I was among the first people to buy the old school 15" Brahmas, w/o even hearing them. Having also owned a 15" XXX, I know they are super capable.

Fiberglass should be really strong, so I dont think a 12" xxx will be a problem. I figured I would rock the W6v2 b/c I can get it so cheap and also b/c airspace would be perfect.

Anywho, the w7 is a very potent driver that a lot of people like. I'm one of the few naysayers that simply do not like the sound in ported/tuned or sealed enclosures. I'm spoiled b/c of my experience with Adire, RE, Elemental etc. Take that with a grain of sale. 80% of the population would think they are the best subs on the market, but I fall in the balance of that 'made up statistic.'

Trying to decide what to do is a very very difficult decision. Spending all that money on the box better be worth it. I'm going to fatmat the crap out of the rear.
