GPS issue w/ N1
guys I need your help. I just installed my N1 and the GPS unit is all wrong. the Navi is telling me that i'm 5 blocks away from the actual location that i'm at. it varies everytime i start the car after a while. it can be 10 blocks away, 2 blocks, etc. any possible reason for this? i'm going to post pics of where the gps antenna and brain is installed. the antenna is in front of the dash and the brain is behind the passenger seat. the brain is pointed in the right direction so thats not the issue. does it have to be leveled straight? i cant think of anything else. i just hope its not the brain itself thats screwed up. i did buy it used from a member on this forum. please help me out if you know anything about this issue. Paul, you are the guru of navi's, tell me what you think it can be. thanks
i don't have n1. i have eclipse but one thing i know is you need to calibrate it right after you install it.
mine, i even have a button for new tire install, which make it in quick calibratoin mode.
read your manual how to recalibrate your nav.
hope that helps.

i did some more search on other forums and they said that you have to reset the learning mode and a few minutes of outdoor driving to learn and calibrate your location. i'm not quite sure where to reset this. for you N1 owners, help me out on this. to reset the learning mode is it the "3D Calibration" screen and clear all "distance, "speed pulse" and "learning status" options?
Yeah, clear all those. Do you know if you have the vehicle speed sense wire hooked up? That also helps in a more accurate calibration. Also check your GPS antenna signal strength, I believe it is on the same screen. Leave the DVD disc in the N1 as well as you are doing the calibrations. Do some local driving(not highway/interstate) and the AVIC should calibrate and find itself. I am an installer at a Best Buy and we have had a few issues with antennas being placed on the dash. Reason being is that antennas like a GPS or satellite radio antenna should be mounted on a metal surface. The antenna works similar to a satellite dish for the home. The antenna uses about 2-3 inches of the surrounding area around the antenna to help it "recieve" the signal, so if you have it mounted on your dash, you have less surface area for reception.
it works perfect now, thanks. but the thing is i never hooked up the speed wire. my speed pulse works though. it tells me how many mph i'm going. i guess the antenna senses it? i have another question, after installing the system my airbag srs light went off. the only thing i can think of is when i took out the pass chair and unplugged the connectors but i did reconnect them so i have no idea why its srs light is blinking. my friend told me that his friend installed an N1 in his altima and had the same issue. any idea guys?

try disconnecting the batt for a good 30 minutes if u haven't already. else u have to get a computer to clear the code.

this thing is going all wrong for me again. for some reason my car was off again so i decided to reset the calibration again. now its not even picking anything up. my car is in one spot on the map. any idea why? can it be my gps antenna? where else can i mount this thing.
ok so i read the installation instructions and it says use the metal sheet thats supplied w/ the unit. thats something that i left out. it says stick that sheet on the dash than place the gps over it. hopefully this will work. any of you guys had your gps mounted like this?
I have the AVIC N2 and have my GPS antenna mounted on the little metal sticky pad that I cut down to fit between the two windshield defrost vents.
An early install picture:

The speed pluse will add to the accuracy.

It's a white wire with gray bands in the middle jack of the highlighted box above.
I've had mine in for nearly three weeks in and only have put 200 something miles on it in that time. Going by the gauges in the calibration it might take 500 before it's happy.
The N2 has a connection screen that gives indications on all the various connections including signal strenght on the GPS antenna and an audible tone for the speed wire.

I have the N1. I think that metal plate will make all the difference. I have mine mounted on that metal square at the bottom of the A pillar on the passenger side.
Mild Hi-jack still on topic:
My unit has been great except for one problem that I cannot pin point. When I'm in a drive gear (R or D) (I have an auto) I get a whine that comes out of the speakers, but it goes away in Neutral and Park. It is not the typical speaker wire whine because it is not relative to my RPM. (I had that problem in my old car) It is a constant tone/pitch volume the whole time I'm driving. It isn't audible over music, but it is annoying when I am at a stand still with the music off waiting for something.
Don't know if any of you have had this problem. I think its related to the N1 because it only shows up in drive gears.
End Hi-Jack
But ya, that metal plate should solve your problem.

yup, that metal sheet made everything A-OK. hopefully for good. i did the same as you did Paul but i wish i did cut it to fit nicely. i didnt because the instructions said not to because the signal wont be as good.
