Going to start my SQ intall soon and I'm wondering how much deadener (I'm using edead v4) will I need and where are the areas that I should cover.

For example, in my last install I covered the WHOLE interior with about 300 lbs of dynamat, to include walls roof firewall... EVERYTHING. And it was so sweet I got off just hearing the thud of the doors and crap.

But that was probably overkill.

 

The More the Better.. I am going to say 20sq ft per Door (Inside Doorskin, Door Frame, Inside Door) 40SQ ft for the Floor, 20sq Ft for the Firewall Doubled Up, 20sq Feet for the Rear area behind the seats and 40sq ft for the Trunk. I would save 20sqft for the Roof if you decide to do that too.

So that is 180sq ft if you were to go hard core on it.

 

ok. I'm ordering 200 sq ft then so I have a little extra.

 

i did a car once, used about 300 sq feet, but in a larger sedan:

sprayed the INSIDE of hte door panels wtih spray deader, two layers of dampening on each door, 3 days on pillars, floor and trunk area, sprayed the inside of metal places where i cant get to, even dampened and sprayed a lot of the plastic interior panels, new clips for everyything..etc etc..

the car was dead as a tomb...nothing could rattle it, but it hink i added like 200 lbs to the car easy lol

in the end, unless youa re REALLY REALLY serious into sq (that was an iasca comp car), you may not need to go to this lengths.

REMEMBER NOT TO COVER ANY SCREW HOLES WITH DAMPENING, CUASE ONCE YOU REALIZE YOU COVRED A BUNCH, FINDING THEM AGAIN IS GOING TO BE NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE...I KNOW THIS FROM EXPERIENCE LOL... I CUT A LITTLE HOLE OUT FOR EACH SCREW HOLE AS SOON AS I PUT THE DAMPENING DOWN

 

haha yeah no kidding. I learned that the hard way on an install. I sat there for a few hours poking around with an old screwdriver trying to find them.

What are your thoughts on spray or paint-on deadener? I know edead v3 is a liquid but I've never used them. I'd imagine it could get pretty messy and I'm not sure you could get even coverage on walls and places where it would drip or slide down. THoughts?

 

They make a sprayer that you hook to an air compressor for the liquid stuff.
I have never used it personally, but I dont think you can coat it on as thick for as cheap as the sheet stuff.

If you have unlimited funds, go for it. Buy 50 Gallons and have a hoot!

 

um... yeah but I'm notorious for being a bad painter. I would probably end up getting this stuff everywhere.

 

i used the spray can stuff lol...yeah it wanst cheap...

the dampening alone on the car was about 1500 bucks

 

well I'm not so worried about the price if spray on does a better job. Do you have pics of yours after the spray? How does it compare to a normal sheet deadner? Obviously not as thick so I'm guessing it wouldn't be as effective at soundproofing as it would just a vibration deadener.

 

no i dont unfortuantely, that was before i even had a digicam hehe...

i would say price for price, the spray isnt as effective, but, for inside of the door i mean like the inside of the outter skin of the door,and other impossible to reach places, its the best bet...

 

well price aside, how does a completed (pro installed) spray-on compare to a completed (pro installed - or by me.. and I'm pretty decent) sheet? And I mean as far as deadening and soundproofing?

 

You know, a Spray on Base with Sheets over it would be Uber Effective...

 

^^^^^ exactly, the key is to use combinations, some areas, the spray on is better, some the sheets is better, and if you combine the two yeah, that will be killer

 

....just go buy a lexus and call it a day.

 

I just don't want to do it myself. Not because I can't but because I have this silly idea that a shop is going to do a better job. And things that spray always make me remember the time I was spraying primer on a dash piece outside and overspray drifted in the wind onto my car. That sucked. So now I'm totally afraid of spray cans.

Know any shops that could do this sorta job? Preferrably east coast.

 

I would wait till spring to do it unless the shop you drop it off at has a heated bay and will keep it for a couple of days. The adhesive needs to be warm to stick effectivley and set up.

If you wanted to drive to WV we could apply it over a weekend, It would probably save you a small fortune.

 

serious? I'd totally drive there. Well as long as we could do it at the end of this month. Like first few days of march. Got a heated bay there?
