Default Experience with 8" Sub?

I'm looking for people's opinion's on 8" Subs. I have never in my life heard what a good 8 is capable of. The only 8's i've ever heard were wal-mart specials in full range truck boxes bangin around in a guy's trunk. I have a really good idea as far as location, just not sure about the sound from an 8. I've always had pretty decent quality sub's, in 10" or 12".

I'm looking at the JL 8w7 or the kicker S8L solo baric. Has anyone heard these subs in person? only thing driving me away from the JL is the cost (yes i know you get what you pay for) but i've heard really good things about the kicker subs recently.

What are your thoughts?

i have installed and listend to quite a few good 8s...both the jl and the kicker have great output for an 8" sub, with the jl having just a little bit more but being a lot more expenisve. basically, two s8l7s will be quite a bit louder than a single 8w7...and if tuned correctly, my opinoin is that both can sound good.

another good 8" sub is the crystal CMP8. whcih one the "great 8 shootout competition of a ton of different 8" subs a while back.

go to www.sounddomain.com forums and search for like 8" sub competition...

It just depends on what you are looking for. I have used both brands. I sell JL and I was sponsered by kicker. So I have installed both on many many occasions. If you are going for a SQ system I would go with the 8W7. It will have very nice output levels and the response of the woofer will just blow you away.

The L78's are very nice as well. Focusing more on big bass with little space. IF you are trying to get alot of bass in your 350z without taking up much space then these things will do the jobs.

FYI. I am doing the 8w7's in my z..

Really depends on your choice of music also. The 8's have a really tight nice bass sound and sounds really good for rock, metal, and country. Not so good for rap. Just my 2 cents.

my biggest thing is i need bass, and i need as much trunk as i can get. I am goin to talk to some local guys to see what they'll charge to do the install. I listen to everything, just want some good bass in extremely tight space. I'll probably look further into the kickers. If anyone local is good with fiberglass, please let me know!

False statement. It all depends on the 8 you are using. Most 8's have the same frequency response as a 10 12 or even a 15. The only difference is going to be the amount of cone area. Which will affect the SPL of the driver. Not the bass notes themselves. Bottoming out with a 8" is a enclosure problem not the driver. I have 6" woofers in my car right now and they play well into the 20hz range.

very broad vague statement. care to explain how?

maybe look into soundsplinter rli8. and if the crystal is the one which one the great 8 shootout look into that. ill take bricks word for it bc i cant remember and am too lazy to look it up again. from waht i remember i dont think the w7 did as good as you would think. but again its been a couple of months since ive looked ta that thread. either way i think you will be ok, though you could porbably get tow kicker 8s form a reputable place online for the same price as the dub7.
edit:i think cdt just came out with a new 8 sub but i havent heard much about it yet.

dude, if you have 6's gettin down to 20hz, you GOTTA build my enclosures! Holy hell!

I've been looking around, and the kickers seem to be a great sub for very little space.

for the record, i couldnt find that 8" sub shootout anywhere on sounddomain. I wish I had a good shop around here for audio. It's mostly low quality ricer crap places.

i'll check into the cdt as well

I have a pair of 8" Infinity Kappa Perfect 10dVQs in a Zenclosure box and they thump plenty deep and loud enough driving them at 2 ohms with +600 honest watts.

I'm getting response from them above 105 dB which is where my hearing protecting started to not be enough for my comfort and I chickened out on the volume control. They're putting out down below 20 Hz but bunches of dB down - most music doesn't have information down there anyway - I can't speak to what rap does to their sound in post production effects.

Even at 20 Hz the Kappas are putting out nearly 100 dB worth of energy. Peak energy was near 40 Hz. I probably had a handful of dB left in the volume control before I stopped.

Home theaters need response south of 20 Hz for THX/Dolby Prologic IIx effects. My little old SVS "Ultra" has just a single 12" driver driven with 525 watts and is good down to 12 Hz.

Autos load up in the small space which gives you huge gain. My home subwoofer is driving a room of 30,000 cubic feet ... my car stereo might be doing 60 cubic feet worth.

Might want to look into IDQs as well, which need very little volume, so it will save you alot of space if thats what you need. I personally run an IDQ8 in my prelude so that I can save trunk space.

Here is a Digital Designs 8" driver that i'll throw into the mix

www.innovativerides.com built this car. Nice little option if you didn't want to take up any trunk space.
