I have a modded xbox in my car.. 80GB HD.. had it in there for about 2 years now:

I'm using a 350W inverter for the xbox.. I wired the inverter to an ignition source so it turns on-off when i turn my car on-off.
I then modified the xbox in an "always on" or "always off" mode by soldering two points together on the back of the power button panel:

I just turn the xbox on once by pressing the front button and it always stays "on".. even when it loses power.. plug it back in or give it power and it boots back up by itself.. just the behaviour i wanted..I never have to really touch my xbox..
if i want the xbox off no matter what, I just tap the power button again and it stays off until i tap the button again..

not sure if you're still trying to get info on this topic, but here's what i did incase you're still looking around.
modded xbox with 200gig hd and evo-x as the "desktop"
350 watt inverter with built in ground loop
wireless doorbell kit
digital fm modulator
an extra ground loop
extra long ide cable
rca cables
some wire, sotter and shrink tube to extend the dvd reader's power cables
2 white led computer fans to cool my xbox (i was having a problem with overheating)
and a navbox unit to allow me to run my xbox using my stock nav screen.
long story short:
the dvd reader now sits in the center counsil (with some modifications of course). the top 3 switches in the change tray control the xbox. from left to right they are the cd eject push button, xbox/nav toggle and modulator power switch, and inverter power switch. the whole thing aside from the modulator is running off of its own power source right off the battery. the whole thing is turned on by pushing the middle homelink button on my rearview mirror or by pushing the eject button in the change tray.
i used an old pic of my car as a background, which i need to change because my car doesnt look like that anymore.
