Default Grounding

I spent the entire day getting my eclipse nav installed and now there is a serious humming sound coming from the speakers (even with zero volume). I think the problem may be with how I grouded the nav unit- I used the large black harness at the very top of the dash (behind the 3 gauge cluster). Is this not a ground? Any help is very much appreciated.

ground it directly to the frame of the car, as I recall there are bolts back there that can be used.

If not there run a wire from the battery negative termal directly to the unit for piece of mind.

I too used the harness ground point behind the triple gauge and had alternator whirl. As the RPM of the motor changes the pitch of the sound changed. I had my amplifiers grounded to a point near the middle of the uni-body.

I ended up running a nice 8 gauge wire from the back of the radio to the amplifier's grounding point.

I suspect that the Nissan's alternator puts out a bunch of AC power on their DC outputs causing the whirl - that combined with the poor ground of the dash causes the problem.

You want one common ground point for the amplifers, CD, and headend to prevent ground loops where there are multiple points to the power ground though various body panels and signal wires.

Guys- thanks for the advice. So I actually found the problem was that I had my amp and MAX (and I mean it wouldn't turn anymore). So I cranked it way down and things are better. I have rev'd the engine some (3-4000) and I don't hear any change in the music. Does that mean I'm okay?

BUT I still hear hiss from my speakers when the amp is on but the audio is off (even from the rears when I pull the rear RCA connection from the amp). I have heard this is normal- is this true? What amount of hiss should there be, if any? FYI, I should have a "good" ground there (I grounded to the metal wall that divides the glove box and stock sub location. I now know it would better to have everything grounded together, but I'd prefer not to need to go back and rewire. Thanks.
