First, when I said 'dead' I simply meant it needed to be charged. But, you bring up another point. Once a battery sits long enough to completely drain itself it will never operate at its maximum capability again. Completely draining a battery is referred to as 'deep cycling' the battery, and a deep cycled battery will never have the storage capacity that it did before the deep cycling.
My car, an '04 G35 with 14K miles on it is on its 2nd battery due to the fact that the car sits in shops for extended periods, and it set without a motor in it for three months. The stock battery is weak compared to the red top Optima I have now!
So, if you spent 6 weeks working on your stereo, and you were using the battery to test it, without ever actually starting the car, and you were listening to it until the battery died (like it sounds like you were) it is very likely that the battery does in fact need to be replaced. Not because of a quality problem with the battery, but because the battery was not taken care of by the owner.

This is totally out of left field but if you have the white A/C control module under the HU disconnected the car will turn over but not start (And your check engine light will be activated). I learned this the hard way.
