Default Video Camera and "Chase Cam"

I'm looking into buying a digital video camera and what I am looking for is one which will accept a "chase camera." One of those cameras you can mount on the roof of a car or where ever.

Does anyone know which video camera would be good for this and also where I could get one of the remote cameras?

I searched on the web but got some shady web sites.

Any info would be appreciated.

There are a couple of camera mounts designed to mount to glass or smooth body panels. Some are simple and others are much more complex/exensive. I found one that has a vacuume indicator on it for the safety of the camera, car, and other traffic. Not cheap at $110 but good quality.

I have 2 of their cameras...great quiality, and a nice guy to do buisness with (really quick shipping). I'm also using their PIP unit, and run that to an Archos AV700 DVR to record it all. (I run 1 camera to the front bumper tow hook, and the 2nd to different locations...) I can take a few pics of the set-up when I get home if you want.

you can put this anywhere with a smooth surface. its freakin sweet. i use it to record my drifting/track:

highly recommended (if you have a miniDV cam)

if you dont have a miniDV, then go with the ChaseCam and their digital recording device.. the lipstick camera can go anywhere..i.e. front grille, etc.

Chase Camera:
I have their PIP unit; allows 2 video inputs, then overlays 1 video onto the other. You can move where you want the overlayed video to be place on the screen.
Here's 2 photos from their website

These are the cameras I got from them (2):

I got one of each mounting type: Next time I have an event, I'll try using the suction type on the side of the car near the front wheel...I think it'll be a neat shot seeing the wheels turn.

Archos AV 700, DVR, 100 GB memory. this unit accepts RCA inputs and records to it's hard drive. It has a 7" screen too.

here's a pic:

The whole system works very well together ~ I went with the archos unit b/c I also use it on long trips to play movies...we took a trip to Europe a few months ago and it was so nice to have 20 full movies to watch. If you're only looking to record the video, I'd go with Chase_camera's video recorder - it's a similar design to their PIP unit (it's a simple, strong design, and it looks like it was designed for in-car use...I've heard a lot of ppl having problems with full camera's breaking from the vibrations of in-car video use)

Let me know if you want actual pics of my set-up...it looks the same as the above photos, but with all of the wiring.

here's a video I took at Thunderhill this past year:

It was with a previous set-up I borrowed from work (the camera's weren't as nice as the Chase units)

Wow thanks for the info. Ill def look into it. Are there any suggestions on getting something where I dont have to hard wire it? WHat I need is something which is self contained or use the cig adapter to give it power. COuld I get The chase came and then the archos and just use those?

When I ordered from Chase, they had options for hard wire or cig plug 12Vdc...it might have even come with both. The Chase PIP, cameras, and Archos don't take very much power -> I have them all the Cig. plug circuit.

I'd prefer to get power from the car - I've had camcorder batteries run out during 1/2 hr track sessions...sucks when you actually goto reveiw a certain lap and it's not there.
