I used to sell both JL & MTX (not to mention about 20 other brands over my sales career). I'd say JL made their name by being:

1. Hip & New - I remember the hottest cars a couple years ago were the JL Audio / PPI combo's. Tons of handling coupled with tons of power.

2. Clean - The JL surrounds are engineered significantly better than most MTX products. JL drivers tend to be better designed / built as well (not all but most)

3. "Upper End" Name - A lot is in a name, but lets face it, people that buy their sound systems at Best Buy end up with Fosgate, MTX, Sony, etc. ( I still don't understand why Sony named their car audio line the same thing as the exact opposite you want to happen to your car stereo )

JL doesn't support online sales, and is very strict about going only through authorized "select" dealers, who are trained on how to match JL subs w/ amps, hookups, etc. There is something to be said for prestige. Also along this line, JL is REALLY quick about responding to warranty issues. You blow a JL sub you might have a new one that day from the dealer just because they know how good JL is about getting a new 1 back out.

Also I'm gonna give a big to kohlersc, encore, & react3, I love a/d/s/, and they don't market well at all. I would kill for 3 sets of their P240s.... Ahhhhh... mmmmm..... oooooohhh.... right there... oh yeah baby.... . . . . mmmmmm
