i would not buy a video/dvd headunit from anyone BUT a major manufacture, such as kenwood, sony, pioneer, eclipse, alpine, panasonic, clarion , etc...

bad reliability, horrible sound quality, bad user interface are a few things you will find in these generic ones...trust me i looked into bringing ove my own brand lol

Did you actually test out the product? Where did you want to bring it over from? I went to a trade show in Taiwan today, there were a few headunits I saw that were decent but as for sound quality/reliability, I have no idea but they did have a 1 year warranty on all parts. Just wondering because I was thinking about getting a HU from there.

Look for JVC's new line and DD screen. Put one in my beater for testing and now love the thing. For the price you can't beat it. $650-$800 (similar to above). Its easy to use and functions great.

You usually get what you pay for.

This is not really a head unit in the classic sense, it has AM/FM and an amp but for the most part it is a carPC control unit. The DVD is USB, the screen is a VGA touch screen, it has power switches that connect to the PC etc. Traditional car audio companies make nothing like this, and chances are they never will.

This looks very interesting for a CarPC, I love traditional volume ***** so that shoots it down for me right off the bat but it looks like a big step forward for CarPCs, especially those that don't have room for a screen. AM/FM and volume **** is the only thing I ever use my current HU for anyway.

All that said, unless you can get a full warranty from the seller (one of those no questions asked type) I would still be concerned about the motors, touch membrane etc. unless you are handy with fixing stuff on your own. Most of the internals of these setups use the same controllers and parts so they are available on the web as components but $650 is a lot to pay to have something like that brick itself because a touch membrane or fluorescents die if you can't readily fix it.

Cool cool, thanks guys. Honestly I dont know jack about car audio I drove BMW's this and the sounded good enough for me. I just need some heat unit with a simple near stock look to it. I don't care too much about nav, just DVD playback and good audio, sub wise I will go with three 8"in sub woofers I dont need too much.

Here's a few options for you...

* Kenwood DDX-7019 (Great iPod Control - high speed and video, optional nav, DVD, optional Sirus/XM, 6.95" touchscreen, fantastic sound quality)

* Kenwood DDX-6019 (Older iPod interface - slower, 6.95" touchscreen, DVD, can find it really cheap, also optional nav)

* Pioneer AVIC-D3 (Decent iPod Control - a little clunky but high speed, integrated nav, DVD, optional Sirius/XM, touchscreen, also great sound quality, great pricing, screen is a little small - 6.1")

* Alpile IVA-W200 (Similar in features to the 6019 though slightly pricier generally, but it's about to be refreshed with the W205, so I probably wouldn't go with this unit. It is nice though. The tactile feedback on the touchscreen is cool.)

All can be had for well under $1k, the 7019 being the most expensive. I have the Kenwood DNX-7100 that I bought from Nazar here on my350z and I absolutely love it, I think he's still selling them for $1250.

…Just another product from China? …That is ahead of its time?

It is probably only a matter of time until:
VGA or other “computer standard” displays replace NTSC/PAL
USB and SD replace CD/DVD input for input, updates and operation
