Why to go cordless? Performance loss is a fact, and on the other hand it takes like 10 minutes top to hardwire RD behind mirror, so it looks quite cordless.

I have used expert mode on the 8500. I did not find it that useful. Also, the display is much smaller in expert mode which is hard to read. After using it for a week or so I changed back (not sure what mode it is that I use now).

I'll try to update this thread soon with my thoughts as I evaluate the v1. I'm about 2 weeks into it now and I do like it. But to reiterate I am not sure its worth the extra cost.

Still... it's all about the arrows! That is the deal-breaker for a lot of folks.

The V1 cannot tell you how many of each signal, but it will tell you how many signals total, and it will light up multiple band lights if you're receiving multiple band signals, flashing the light that is the strongest threat. It will also give a very different "bogey acquired" sound every time the count increases, so you don't have to stare at the display to know you just went from one to two.

In other words, say I pick up an X-band signal in town, and my counter goes to 1 while the X-band light comes on. Suddenly I pick up an additional Ka-band signal of equal strength. Since Ka is a higher threat, the Ka light will start flashing, I'll get the Ka "braap" right after hearing the "bogey acquired" sound (always at full volume even if I hit mute for the X I was already hearing) and the X-band signal light will remain on while the display shows two signals. If they are in different directions I will also get two arrows, the greater threat arrow flashing.

The Escort is an excellent unit, very well built. Don't get me wrong. I just think the V-1 is a notch above it.
Not for me. I've had rides in cars with V1 installed. Saw the arrows and how it works... Just didn't impress me... Say in that case when you see signal in front (front arrow) then side, than back.... Are you keep driving full throttle? Having all that "usefull" information? I bet you'll slow down. Now imagine you don't have arrows... you'll do JUST THE SAME! So what the point of knowing "where from"? Yes probably you can come up with some theretical case... but in real life I hear signal I slow down no questions asked. Don't you?

I guess it's personal to some degree... I wear glasses, and I don't have any problem at all reading all the information. My wife loves it too. I have detector's screen right below the mirror so it's quite natural to look at it. And of course you can hear the most dangerous signal behaviour (priority by band/strengh)

I've had many experiences driving in the same direction as a radar car and knowing if it is in front or behind is invaluable. I used to use a Passport so I was inclined to lean that way, decided to get the V1 and give it the 30 day test drive. I kept it.

As far as wireless is concerned, I always hardwire detectors so that they turn on every time I start the car. Can't do that with a wireless. With the V1 I put it behind the passenger seat on the headliner stud and put the remote in the Nav compartment. Most people can't even find the detector when the Nav door is closed.

Yes, but I KNOW I just passed it. And if I couldn't see the cop, I know he wasn't shooting the traffic that I'm in (or he's invisible), and I know it's safe to hit the gas.

Now if there was no arrow, I wouldn't know if he was still in front of me, just maybe went over a hill or around a corner. But when I see that arrow transition without seeing the cop, I know he's not a threat. He's on the other side of the highway somewhere, or on a side street, and he's someone else's problem.

So in the end, no, I don't drive the same way. I have more information and can make a more informed decision.

Having both the 8500 and the V1 I would say that the arrows are definitely helpful. Escort would be wise to add them.
The special sound the V1 makes when it catches another priority bogey is also most useful.

If escort adapted these features I would have to say it would be better. The rest of the escort UI is better than V1 and detection is sooo close its a wash.

Did you have any negative experiences? Like it didn't went off even when you see cop toking on the radio in the car near you?

False alarms?

I'm thinking about getting one, if I can be sure it really helps. At prices I see it seems to be reasonable investment if it makes cops go home empty.
I do keep the scanner volume turned down and sometimes up to just listen to the chatter of the troopers. It is like everything else and isn’t fail-safe. It just gives you another edge on not getting picked up for speeding. The fact you can check the DOT for road construction tie-ups and listen to the fire department going past you to see if you could be stopped in traffic jam makes it interesting
