it's a 5 channel 1000 watt amp. so basically 200watts per channel... do you think that's still too much power?

I have a question, if I install an amp do I still need to make the typical speaker splices from a new harness to the factory harness or do I keep them separated?

I would leave the stock wires all separate and run new speaker wire from the amp right to new speakers. That way you don't have to cut off the factory ends at the speakers and it will be easier to return to the stock system when the time comes to move on to another vehicle. Besides, the stock wire is a bit thin.
