CD?... I thought the OEM Nissan navigation device uses a DVD.

If I am correct, and you are in fact trying to run the device with a CD, it's no wonder that it doesn't work.

^^ Where (from whom) did you get the DVD?

I'm asking because we recently had a couple of guys who signed-up on my350z.com only to sell some renegade copies of Nissan's OEM Navigation DVD. I believe that we successfully chased them off the Forum, but unfortunately not before they ripped-off some members.

If he purchases the latest authorized DVD from Nissan, will that bring his system up to par?

I’m asking because I don’t know. I have seen cases where Z owners purchased illegal copies of the navigation DVD, and then experienced almost total failure (similar to what the OP describes) because the renegade disk did not update the device properly (firmware failure).

assuming that his system does not have any other problems, updating the firmware to match the map version should fix it.. say if he has 6.4 map version and updated to the firmware that came with 6.6 (latest), i'm not sure if the firmwares are backward compatible

yuri, can you tell us the version of the dvd map that came with your car?

7.1? that is for 06-08 nav systems.. im not sure if you can install the 06-08 firmware on your system... the latest map version for 03-05 is 6.6 and you need the latest firmware to go along with it.

It’s becoming more apparent why going with an aftermarket GPS product is a better choice.

It’s a pain if you need to match a mapping database with firmware updates, and requiring matching this requirement to the year of your car (i.e., the specific device) is a poor arrangement. The “held-captive” and over-priced and antiquated DVD updates makes this situation even worse.

Alpine, Eclipse, Kenwood, Pioneer, and other aftermarket manufacturers make GPS devices that are superior to the OEM gps devices car manufacturers install in their cars.

^^ Agreed.

And past this (HDD-based navigation), I prefer devices that isolate navigation to “flash” ROM/RAM (providing exceptional navigation performance) and use DVD and HDD for music and other storage. “Flash” memory provides the best (and by far the fastest) navigation functions/features, while DVD and HDD provide huge storage and easy playback.
