Default Building system

Hey all, hope everyones doing well. Heres my situation.

I have built systems before, but that was years ago and I just bought bits and pieces and put them together...they always worked, but I doubt to their optimal performance. I am working on a new system for my Z and am stumped. I have never actually looked at Ohms, RMS and things of this nature with much relevance until now. I Bought 2 10" Kicker Comp VR 07CVR102's and a Z enclosure with amp rack. My question is this. The kickers have two 4 ohm coils per sub, a RMS of 50-400 watts per sub and a peak power of 800 per sub. Does this mean That I need a amp capable of 1600 watts and impedance of 16 ohms? What power rating and such should I be looking for in an amp(s). Like i said I am trying to do this right, and am stuck at this point. Thanks for any help. later everyone have a good one.

With two dual-4ohm subs, you can achieve a 1ohm load or a 4 ohm load to a monoblock amp. each sub can handle 400 watts RMS, so you will want an amp that can output 800 watts RMS into 1ohm or 4ohm load. The amp could be rated for more than 800 RMS, but ideally you want 800 RMS. You won't find too many amps that will do 800 watts RMS into 4ohms, so your best bet is to find one that will do 800 watts RMS into 1ohm.

This amp is a tank and puts out an honest 1200 watts RMS at 14.4 volts into 1ohm:

Or it's little brother rated at 720 watts RMS at 14.4 volts into 1ohm:
http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?...Product_ID=177

Either of these amps will effortlessly drive your two Kicker subs. There are other amps out there, but for subwoofer duties, Crossfire is tough to beat.

Don't bother looking at any "MAX" ratings of anything. That number is useless for all intents and purposes of putting together a well rounded system.

Cool thanks for the reply I appreciate it, could you clarify the technical portions of this...meaning I would like to understand how I can get a 1ohm load and such, and what all of that means. Once I understand, I will be in a better position to make the decision of which amp. Things like "1000W x 1 at 1 ohm" What is this specifying exactly? Thanks again

Everything you could ever want to know is in the below link. The menu is along the right side of the page. This informational guide is articulated better than I could ever do in a forum thread.

And here is how you would achieve a 1ohm load from YOUR two subwoofers:

Ok so based on the research Ive done, like you said I need 800RMS into 1 or 4 ohms. I want to build a kicker system except the HU. If I find for example a kicker amp that puts out 400 watts at 2 ohms, then if I wired the subs for 1 Ohm then that amp would suffice because at 1 ohm it would put out 800 watts right? And inversely if I found a amp (for example only) that at 1 ohm put out 3200 watts then at 4 ohms that same amp would put out 800? I may be completely wrong but I am trying to understand lol.

So it would look like this all the same amp

3200watts x 1 @1 ohm =3200 watts
3200watts x 1 @2 ohm =1600 watts
3200watts x 1 @4 ohm =0800 watts.

Am I understanding this correctly?

And in the same example if I was to increase the channels, the power would be cut in half or doubled based on which way I go like this...

3200watts x 1 @1 ohm =3200 watts
3200watts x 2 @1 ohm =1600 watts
3200watts x 2 @2 ohm =0800 watts

Right? lol

EDIT** So if my info is correct then this kicker amp would be nearly perfect

let me know how Im doing..Ill leave it at this, thanks

If an amp doesn't list a rating at 1ohm then it most likely isn't stable to 1ohm. However, your thought process is simplistically correct. There is more to it than just doubling/halving the power rating, but for 12volt electronics, it almost always works out to be about double/half. This same theory can not be automatically translated to home audio though.

That amp you linked to would be perfect for driving your 2 subs.......but $1000????? It is a nice amp though. I like Kicker amps.

yea I noticed that while I was searching around that most amps show a power rating based on 2 or 4 ohms because they are unstable at 1 ohm. I know there is more to it, I'm just glad I have the basics down. I am going to keep looking around and see what I find because yes 1000$ is a ton for a amp, but I want to stay kicker, always loved them, never had problems and have not ever heard of serious complaint. My front and rear mids Im just going to change out, Im not to worried about putting components in. Some normal kicker speaker should do just fine. Anyone know the power rating for the stock amp? I don't think there will be a problem just changing out the speakers right? Anyway thank you for the help everyone.

So my system is looking like this

2 10" Kicker Comp VR 07CVR's
08 ZX 1500 Watt Kicker Amp
Z-Enclosure (2 10's under strut bar w/ amp rack)
Four 6.5 inch KS600 Kicker Speakers

I still need to settle on a HU, but Im definitely going with a screen where the old radio goes just not to sure yet. Suggestions? Ive heard alot about a pioneer HU everyone likes, Im also not looking for a NAV, I don't travel to much so its useless money.

you can go with the pioneer avh4000, just recently came out, its there entry level HU so there is no navigation, it has good ipod interface, i have it and i love it for what it does, just search around and get what appeals to you
