Nima: They will upgrade you to the latest version but not for free. They give you a sort of prorated price. It isn't cheap either. To upgrade my 93 version to the latest would have been like $265.00 if I remember correctly. I just bought a new one and kept the old one in my Stealth.

i THINK v8 is just a bit slimmer than v7. not much difference at all though.

Just keep in mind, if you put it above your rear view mirror, you'll lose your rear detection.

NM, i thought you have a Z. Yah, the Maxima should have some clearance even if the V1 is mounted above the rear view mirror.

if you buy off ebay get the serial number. You can type it into V1's webpage and see how much the upgrade will cost you and whether it is worth doing or not.

I'm thinking of replacing my V1 with the Escort 8500....it has better ratings these days than the Val. One thing I would miss though is the direction indicators. These are one of the best features of the Val...plus the remote monitor I have on it! *sigh*.

But....I want to add that ZR3 lidar scrambler, and it works in tandem with the 8500.

Anyone using the ZR3 with the Val1??? How bout the VR3 + 8500???

Supposedly there was a pretty major improvement in false rejection with the latest firmware. Sure the upgrade isn't free, but at least you have the option. How many other companies would make you just buy a brand new detector?

And no your tinting won't hurt radar detection, but it will hurt laser detection.

I think laser is used mostly for speed traps. I.e. they don't just drive around and use it; they use it when they are doing a dedicated speed trap, maybe trying to get their quota filled for the month all in one day.

Laser can't be used while driving. The cop has to be stationary, and generally will have the window rolled down, or even standing outside the car. So they don't use it casually, no.

But I have been hit with laser a few times (fortunately traffic was heavy so I couldn't speed even if I wanted to; stupid cop -- real smart time to get the laser gun out).
