Default Sound System help for my 3000GT

i want to build a pretty sweet system for my car. im pretty set on 2 12in. kicker solo barics. they are 1200 watt each.

question is...what would be a good amp to power them, i know solo barics are powerful, but do i need 2? i've always liked the look of 2 subs to just 1.

Havn't done the sound system thing in quite some time but 2 subs powered by one amp is very doable. Problem is the price on a big amp like that can be high (especially if you want name brand stuff).

2 smaller amps would be more cost effective. When you powering those subs, your going to want to classify them by RMS rather than max (its just easier that way). I would also recommend a 1 Farad capacitor to keep things going.

So basically those can both take 600 RMS but i would give them between 450-500 RMS to be on the safe side.

SO... looking through amps you either want to find an amp that in the specs says:
RMS Power @ 4 Ohms: 500W x 2 (for a single amp)
or
RMS Power @ 4 Ohms: 500W X 1 (for two amps)

All this being said, im not to current on whats hot in todays amp market so others can chime in with that. My simple advise is to spend that extra buck on a quality amp cause it will most likely save you money down the road.

i guess i have it kind of figured out.

1 1200 watt 12 in solo baric would be good with AT LEAST a 650 watt mono amp
this stuff confuses me

Ok, you are getting confused with its peak power rating which is 1200 watts MAX. Effectively though, you only need about 600 watts to power it on a daily basis. Now onto a few other answers...

- I am glad you chose just one. Never chose a sub set-up based entirely on the looks unless you don't care how it sounds. A single 12" sub in a custom ported enclosure in that car will be enough!

- 2 subs would need an excessivley large box in order for it to pound hard and sound good. Plus its more weight and will cost more with an extra or larger amp.

- If you have chosen a single 12" solobaric with a dual 4 ohm voice coil, you need to match up an amplifier than can be most effective at 2 ohms in mono (and be stable too). Kicker makes a lot of 2 ohm stable amplifiers. 600 watts would be ideal.

- I mentioned the enclosure before and this is very important! Custom or pre-built to spec is fine as long as it is designed around that sub. If some chico slaps a box together without putting any design effort into it, you may as well just quit now. Enclosure is VERY important!

Good luck hombre.

I agree with Orgasm Donor. You will need an amp that will run around 600 rms 1200 peak. You can also go bigger for a possibly upgrade in the future. Since the S12L5 is dual 4 ohm, you will need to get a quality amp that will allow you to run at 2 ohms. Kicker do make quality amps. A bit costly, but well worth every penny. Again, just echoing Orgasm Donor's advice.

The two ohm DVC and 4 ohm DVC are identical in power handling and sound quality. The only difference is wiring options. If you get a DVC 2 ohm then you will need an amp that'll do 600 watts at 1 or 4 ohms. Powerful 1 ohm stable amps are pretty easy and cheap to come by these days. They are usually 1000 watts plus though but you can gain it down to match up with the sub.

It sure is jibberish. It is also important to match your speakers to a quality amp. Since you are going to be running 1 amp, you will need an amp that is 2 ohm stable (dime a dozen). How is it 2 ohms? Each voice coil is 4 ohms. Since the speaker has 2 voice coil, when you combine the 2 together, you either get 2 ohms. If you were to run 2 of the same speakers (which you are not), you can remain at 4 ohms. The lower your ohms, your harder your amp will work/draw current from your battery. I have also provided a link to see how you can wire your sub.
