2 8" subs vs 1 10"?
i just recently installed my sound system, reference 6.5 components up front, 6.5 coax's in the rear, 1 10" dvc reference sub, 5 channel amp. i listen only to rock only, and find that the 10 gets a bit boomy, im wondering if a couple of 8"s would be tighter? i dont have much experience with 8's. infinity makes 4 ohm svc coil 8's and im running my dvc 4 ohm 10 at 2 ohms, so they would swap out perfectly and stay at 2 ohms. anyone experienced tell me if its worth while please?
You can tune your sub to sound the way you want.
What make & model sub
What are the enclosure specs
What amp is powering the sub
what headunit are you running the system with
Let's start with these questions and see what we can come up with for you.

if you don't need deep bass.. nothing below 65hz then go with 8's.. they will sound more accurate (depending on the brand) than 10's.. however 10's will hit lower than 8's.. just as 12's will hit lower than 10's.. however a good 10 will be more accurate than a sh!tty 8..
and kill the rear speakers.. if you care about the sound quality and the balance its just going to throw the whole system off.. spend more on components

OK, just looked up your sub and amp. My guess is that you have your crossover settings a little off. I'm assuming you are using the low pass filter on the amp and not on your head unit (if your head unit has one)?
If so, dial the amp's low pass filter to around 65-70hz.....this should be somewhere between the arrow pointing straight up and 80hz marker (i.e just past 1/2 way).
Dial the high pass for the front's to the same setting, or just a HAIR lower (closer to the 1/2 way point than the 80hz mark).
As for the rears, I don't like 'em; but if you want to keep them I would recommend setting the high pass for them to around 150hz and turning the gain down until you can just barely hear them.
Next, set the bass/treble, sub level, and/or EQ settings all to absolute 0 on your head unit. And turn the bass boost on the amp to 0db.
See what this does for you. If nothing improves, we'll look at some other options for you.

^^^ sorry didn't read his post in depth.. didn't notice you needed adjusting advice i thought you were deciding between the 10 or the 8's.. yeah as StreetOC said.. adjust the amp to his specs.. it should get much tighter with less boom
thats exactly how i have it set up, except i have the sub set to 80, and the components set to 80. the rears are exactly how you described and the headunit is set to "flat" on the equalizer. so i think you want the sub to play even lower.
this is where i get to the point where i wanted to know if the 8's will be that big of a difference. i want less boom and more punch, and i think 2 8's will be better, i just wanted a general agreement on 'yes' or 'no'. i want to make sure i wont be wasting time and money and it will still sound generally the same. im even debating trying 2 6.5" subs where the rear speakers go and going 3 way up front, bridge the 4 channels into 2 and let the sub channel handle the rears. thoughts? thanks again

2 8" subs will most likely be punchier just by the sheer physics of the driver; this of course assumes similar build quality and a proper enclosure.
I have in my Z right now, and highly recommend to those with an open mind, the Tymphany LAT500. It is very punchy, yet still plays down to a rock solid ~35hz. If you are interested in it, let me know and I will tell you all about it. A lot of people are scared because it's different.
If you are interested in the rear speaker location, I just finished writing a post in another thread about it, here's the link....

Where a sub gets 'boomy' depends on the parameters of the sub, the enclosure type and size, and the program material being played. This all plays into where a sub should optimally be crossed over.
I detailed info on the LAT5000 halfway down this page:
