Default Installation Costs

So, I went to my local car audio shop to get an estimate on getting some door speakers, speakers behind the seats, and getting my Pioneer AVH P1400 DVD. They quoted me $643.21 including tax. These are the individual prices

Kicker 6.5 Component Speakers - $199.99
Kicker KS 6.5 Speakers - $99.99
Installation of Component Speakers - $55.00
Installation of a Pair of Speakers - $40.00
Misc. Connector Fee - $3.99
Install of Outside Equipment - $10.00
Installation of In-Dash Screen With no Tuner - $85.00
Metra Dash Kit - $18.99
Metra Nissan Harness - $15.99
Bypass Bose - $75.00

How do you guys feel about the pricing? I'd attempt to do this myself, but I feel like I don't have enough knowledge to do it right and have it look good.

And what is this "Bypass Bose" he said he can't just remove the Bose and install the Kickers.

Do it yourself. Crutchfield will send you installation instructions for free if you buy the equipment from them.

I installed two amps, two subs, a set of components in the door, and a head unit with just the instructions from thiis website - and I had never done anything like this before! It probably took me a little longer than a shop but I know that I put the in the time to do the job correctly. I had no prior experience or training (I'm an English Teacher) but read the directions carefully and looked at all of the pictures. Save the money you'd pay for the install and buy beer and pizza for you and a buddy after he helps and/or watches you do the work!

And for the installation parts, I'm sure you can find them way below retail on-line.

Look at a shops reputation first - prices second. What do you gain with a budget install and the work is mediocre?

The stuff that the shop had setup looked amazing, they actually did a Rhino with a custom system that looked insane. Also, all of there stuff has a lifetime warranty on the install. What I was mainly worried about was the "Bose Bypass," can somebody explain that to me?

Your car is wired for its existing Bose setup which is a proprietary system. Your installer is adding a nominal fee to disconnect or even remove some of the Bose components (SubW and its little amp, for example) and change some wiring. He’s doing some housekeeping so that you have a more clean installation. The fee he quotes is very reasonable.

Yup, just give them a call. I forgot the price though. $25 - $30 maybe?

Do it yourself but with an experienced person who have done audio work before would be the best choice! Post up in the local forum for help. I'm sure someone would be kind enough to help for lunch and drinks

Trust me you will save plus learn about your car a shop would charge you anywhere from the $6oo to $1000 to install they rape people. I believe in supporting shops but there crazy.Check out caradio.com theres a lot of help on there if you get stuck. A little advice dynamat your doors while your at it will improve the sound of your components dramatically. Its simple to do just take your time

If you have basic tools and common sense and the ability to ask questions like on here you'll be fine. Search for some DIY's if you hit a hurdle come here with pics of whats stopping you and im sure you'll get answers ASAP.

You'll feel even better when it sounds sick and YOU did it.
