Default HU or Sub for christmas?

I got a 07 Touring with Bose, Bluetooth, etc .. everything except navi

stuck between buying these two for christmas

1) new head unit w/ navigation .. preferably a double din Kenwood (ex. 8120)

I would gain navigation (big plus for me) .. but I would loose my stock bluetooth (big negative), and not really feeling the look of a flat aftermarket HU in a rounded dash

2) add on a sub .. Zenclosure single 10" .. JL 10W7 (or 10W6) .. JL 500/1 amp

................................

I like the stock bose system .. dont need a system to blow my ears off or shake the car apart

just want it clean sounding .. bose sub is good with bass on some songs and lacks in others

so two questions I got

1) if I get the HU for now .. how will the rest of the bose system sound .. any better? and will I gain anything from the sub or sort of stay the same

2) if I just add on a better sub for now .. which would give me the cleanest sound (clear and defined bass .. not looking to rattle every panel of the car)

A) JL 10W7 ($400)
B) JL 10W6 ($250)
C) Kicker 10" L7 ($225)

Get the HU and then the sub. You're in no rush and the HU is funner to tink around with and navi's always useful.

I have 03 Touring w/Bose and I changed the HU on Pioneer 4100. I can guarantee that sound is much better now. I don't know maybe in 06 Hu better than my 03.

yea .. the HU would be cooler and more fun

the sound is fine to me on the bose .. just the sub seems to lack in areas .. would a aftermarket HU help with that?

I've been looking at the Kenwood DNX9140 .. looks pretty dang nice, a tad out of my "want to spend" range but looks worth it

A hu won't miraculously make incredible bass but it will deff clean up the sound noticeably (at least for me).

thats all I want right now is just a little cleaner bass ..

the stock bose seems to hit nice on some parts of songs and misses on others

other than that I'm happy with the stock system .. thats why I was thinking of just adding a sub

I think you just answered your own question Quality is enough for you right now and you want more bass. One will give you better quality and one will give you bass. If all else fails and you're not happy with the hit from the upgraded HU you can always sell it and buy the sub...

yea .. thats why I was leaning torwards the sub .. it would be cheaper too if I get the 9140 kenwood ($1200 vs $800)

anyways .. what all is involved with hooking up a new HU to the stock bose system

I looked on crutchfield and they keep suggesting all kinds of adapters and stuff

I know I'll need a dash kit and a "harness" .. then one of those adapters for the steering wheel controls

but they keep saying something about a pac adapter that goes between the new HU and the bose amps ??

is that needed or is it fairly straight forward (just harness / match up wires to HU)

I'm starting with the subs in my system (but they were on a really good sale). As for the stock sub vice getting a new one? I used to have a 10w6 in my last car (totaled by a dumb ***) and it was AMAZING! now it sounded beautiful in my mazdaspeed 3 (hatch back with room to breathe). The only thing I would fear is it being more bass than you want. as long as you keep the gain turned down on the amp it should be fine. Remember the W7 series is a competition sub, the W6 punches and moves air. I don't know anyone personally that has owned kicker so I wont talk about it.

The PAC unit? I don't know probably something to interface your new head unit with the bose amp. It seems a lot of BOSE systems have "custom" head units thus making it a bit harder to "upgrade" the stereo with out some kind of OEM interface unit. OEM interface units like Alpine's digital audio processor Device, I have this unit and it's pretty cool lots of tuning with the unit.

I figured out the bose to aftermarket HU .. theres a pac you use for the bose amps instead of buying the harness adapter ..

anyways .. I'm probably going to look into getting a sub if I get anything

the JL 500/1 has the remote thing so I can turn it up / down

as for sub .. I'm going to keep it all JL .. so its either a 10w6 or 10w7

anyone know the difference .. my eyes are giving up after searching for so long .. I'm gonna buy all my other xmas stuff first (for other people) and see what my bank account looks like after

If you go sealed 10w7 you may need the 750/1 amp or higher, if you go vented 10w7 then 500/1 is fine.
10w7 Rated at 750watt 3ohms
10w6 Rated at 600watt dual 4ohms

I personally think the 10w6 is your best choice, it's still can get VERY loud and precise bass from it. Make sure you get the subs from an authorized dealer. I bought my JL stuff online through either Al-eds.com or Crutchfield.com, al-eds is having a 50% off sale in SoCal with price of installation, but I e-mailed them and they gave me a 25% off discount coupon good for 24 hours!

Let me know what you get!
