I bought the Kenwood update disc from GPS City and I'm trying to follow their directions. I'm trying to update the firmware via the SD card slot but my unit doesn't seem to be reading it. I've misplaced my manual...will hunt for it this weekend. Does anybody have any experience with updating?
I'm confused. Are you updating the maps or the firmware?
I've got an 8120 and when you get maps on an SD card, you plug the SD card in and leave it there. It doesn't actually install them, it just reads from the card.
As far as the firmware, I'm clueless. I updated mine once and it worked fine, but the next update didn't work. It just sat there and stared at me.

I'm trying to update the maps. However, the directions before updating the maps state I need to update the firmware. I am getting a disc read error with the map update disc...not sure if it is firmware related.
Does the disc have a file named either of the following: GMAPPROM.IMG or GMAPSUPP.IMG
Does your hu have a micro usb port? I am not sure if your disc will authentic that it is real or what not, but what you can do is put either of those files on your computer and plug into the hu while its on and it might act as a mass storage device, then you can just copy the file onto the hu. You can also get a sd card, make a garmin folder and
put put the img file onto there and the hu should update like a normal garmin unit.
Edit: Did you try the update disc on your computer? Is it allowing you to browse it? Just to make sure the disc is good.

The likely reason your navigation device won’t read the map update SD card is that you need to update the firmware in the device.
When the firmware update completes (do not interrupt this), remove the card and insert your map update card.
Done!

I have the same headunit, The problem I had when I was updating my firmware was I had to use an SD card that was NOT high density. I think high density is greater than 2 GB? I learned this after several trips to bestbuy to find a low density POS generic card.
On a sidenote, perhaps you'll be kind enough to share the map updates with us...pm me...

Yeah they're like a hundred bucks... We should just pass one around and give the original purchaser some money. I have the DNX7100 too... so if that ever happens... I'll definitely pay up.

^^ Yes... the firmware update and the map update both are accomplished via an SD card.
You need to do the firmware first, and then the map update after.
If you follow the instruction set for your device, you can expect a flawless update.
I would offer kudos for both Kenwood and Garmin. The firmware update provides a significant improvement. The font display is much better. Composite video is noticeably improved.

Yeah, when I put the SD card in I got nothing. I'll go purchase a non HD card later on today.

Kenwood unit doesn't seem to recognize any SD card I put in it. I just bought a SanDisk 2GB not HD card to apply the updates. It says all I have to do is put the card in and it will ask to update. Mine does nothing. What am I doing wrong?
I don't have a USB connection to the unit. The only connection on it is the iPod adapter.
The Garmin disc itself works. I put in my computer and I can see all the files.

The Garmin disc is https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=36709
The disc will not work in my actual Kenwood unit but I can see it clearly has the needed files when in my computer. I was trying to follow you advise by using an SD an updating the actual Kenwood unit first to see if it would then read the Garmin disc. After following the directions on the site when I put the SD card in the Kenwood unit it does nothing. Is there a specific menu I need to go to? Should it work automatically?
The installation notes (under the requirements tab from the above link) on the Garmin site state that I need to update my receiver software...but in neither Group A, B, or C is the DNX7100 listed. Am I missing something?

You have the wrong map disk. The DVD disk you have will not work with your device.
This is the link to the map update you need for your unit:

The reason Garmin distributes the map updates on physical media (a SD card or DVD) vs. a download is to allow copy protection. I realize that people hate copy protection, but there are good reasons for this.
- Garmin licenses the mapping data from a digital map supplier (NAVTEQ or TeleAtlas). That license agreement undoubtedly requires some type of data security in the form of copy protection.
- Also, Garmin must insure this data is not used on an inappropriate device.
There are other good reasons not to copy software and sell the copies:
- Violating Copyright Law for financial gain exposes you to significant penalties.
- If you copy the disk to new media and mail this, you are guilty of mail fraud (using the USPS to accomplish a crime). That carries very high penalties (including possible prison time
).

Also, any ideas why the receiver won't notice the SD card with the firmware updates?

When you try updating the software using the download copied to a SD card, and your device already has the latest software installed; nothing happens.
All you need now is the Garmin SD card with the map updates.
And, you are not out the $70. Since this DVD has CP, you should be able to return it to Garmin. I’ve always had very favorable experiences when dealing with Garmin.
