^^ A speaker with 2.75” depth-to-wall is too deep for the stock door mount.

But, that does not mean you should abandon these speakers. Consider door pods. Pods do increase the cost, but you will get much better sound.

The stock door mount is lousy since the stock grille blocks the speaker’s output, the space is tight, and it’s difficult to deaden the door adequately when mounting a quality speaker.

Yeah i know the door pods are great for sound but i really dont like the way the pods look and deferentially dont want them on my car. Plus im not looking to spend the extra money on the pods. What speakers would you recommend that could fit with just a spacer?

Hi Sam,

Here are my efforts leading to major mistakes. I listened to many speakers and decided I liked Focals best. I bought Focal 165 V2 (Depth from wall: 2.7"). Unfortunately these speakers did not fit the stock front door mount. So, I swapped these for Focal 165 V Slim (Depth from wall: 2.2"). The Focal Slims fit inside the stock door mount, and that is where I mounted the midrange speakers.

What I did not realize at the time was the poor sound the stock door mount provides when mounting decent midrange speakers.
  • The stock grille is not drilled adequately (the “holes” are in fact blocked at the top of the grille).
  • The front door panel is prone to rattling with even moderate bass. I tried very hard to eliminate vibration from the door panel by installing lots of sound deadening, but it did not work.

Notice that the Infiniti G35/37 has its front door speakers mounted in quasi door pods (built-in to the doors). The G is a step-up from the Z as to “luxury” features, and the speaker placement is one example.

If you can live with lower quality sound, stuff your speakers into the stock door mount. If you want better sound, mount your good speakers in a door pod, or get even better sound with a kick’s mount.

+1.

Spike is probably one of the most knowledgeable posters on the da interwebz.

Curious. Do spacers work in the 350? I just used some on my 370 and they are awesome. Never tried to put any different speakers in my 350.

Thank you (and ZKansasZ and sdZ33) for kind words.

Spacers do work in the 350z, and in fact are usually necessary when mounting aftermarket speakers in the 350z’s stock door mount. You have at least three choices:
  • Purchase prefabricated spacers.
  • Make your own custom spacers.
  • Cannibalize the spacers using the mounting ring from the stock speakers when you replace these.
