Best Cost-Effective Security System?
I want to get a security system, like a viper one or whatever, that has the keypad which tells u if someone is near your car, touching your car, if your car gets hit, etc. which would allow u to set the alarm off before they even try anything sneaky.
But cost is a concern. Which ones for around $500 or less should I be looking at? (it can be used, discontinued model, etc.)

I went throught this when I first bought mine for EXACTLY what you're describing. However, after lots of research and advice from security installers... they said don't bother.
By the time you get up and go to your car when your remote goes off, they're gone.
Pros will get whatever they want, regardless of your security.
The light on the dash is enough to deter amateurs.
Save your money for better mods.

My friend's dad has a 850 whp supra. I walked past the thing (close to it but not touching it) and the ****ing alarm went off. I feel like that'd keep anyone from even coming near your car. I think it was a viper cuz it had the blue LED
You can get the viper 5901 installed for $500. Check this post out https://my350z.com/forum/audio-and-v...larm-help.html

Alarms shouldn't be used like this - if they are too sensitive they will false ALL the time and you (and everyone around) will ignore them until they report you to the police for being a public nusience. It is imperative that the alarm be set up properly so that it never (or rarely) falses. This means that if you use a motion sensor the alarm should not trigger unless the car has actually been entered (and not when someone simple walks by it).
A blue LED doesn't mean much as to who made the unit, Audiovox was using blue LEDs before DEI if I remember correctly.
I would agree with some of the stuff listed above - an aftermarket flashing LED will motivate most thieves to move on to the next car UNLESS you have valuables within plain sight in which a "smash and grab" would be worth the risk.
There are things you can do to the OEM system to increase its effectiveness. You can add single stage shock and motion sensors (and glass and tilt, etc) to the OEM system by tying the outputs of the sensors in to the hood pin or hatch pin (diode isolate them all). You can also disable the wire that goes from the key cylinder on the drivers door to the power window controller to prevent knowledgable thieves from bypassing the OEM alarm.
As mentioned above plan to pay for professional installation if you choose to get an alarm. The alarm is only as good as the installer who puts it in. Make sure you check their work and I would even request to review the installation before the car is put back together to make sure the alarm is hidden and the wiring blends in with the factory wiring. If it looks like a plate of speghetti you did not get a professional installation!
