When you rip it apart, examine the existing wire. The power for the antenna amp, and the antenna wire, run side by side. Make sure that your antenna lead isn't shorted also (they could be shorted together)

You'll find the problem. Let me know how it goes. Can't believe you've lived with this problem for so long!
