my quest to 150db in the 350z
i know most of you on this forum are not into loud, heavy systems but for those that are you may enjoy this.
well i have been on a quest to break the 150db mark in a daily tuned setup. with the limited space in the 350z it's a challenge. if you haven't seen my other build thread i had 2 12" fi btl's. i just recently sold one of them to a friend. i just purchased to crossfire prototype subs to put in the same box. these will be under-powered for now like my btl's were. i'm running a crescendo bc3500 at a .5ohm these will be in 4cubes net tuned at 34hz. few friends who have sat in the car with the btl's are guessing on the ear-o-meter i am right around the 150mark so will see if there is any change with the new subs. this setup is deff moving some air as well for 2 12s.
i do have the stock alt for now with a big deka group 31batt in back. actualy hold volts pretty well for nice quick demos.
here is my battery box.
quick picture of the amp. this amp should do around 3700-4k rms if i could keep the volts up on a .5ohm
i will be posting up a vid of them in the next few days. for now i will leave you with a few teaser pics of the subs and a few others i have.

fi btl on left, new crossfire prototype in the middle and my crossfire xsv2 18 on the right.

anyone has any questions feel free to ask.
i will be getting this setup on the termlab soon.
i did however get on a audio control mic which isn't as accurate but had a friend get on the same audio control mic, then a termlab next week at a show and it was a 2db difference. with the audio control reading 2db high. i manage to post a 149.5 on the ac mic. with mic on the dash. this was with the amp only on 2ohms and no extra battery. with the amp on a .5ohm and a big batt in back felt like it easy doubled in output. this was also done on music. subs are still very under-powered but near future has a 270amp alt coming along with a second crescendo 3500 coming.
these are also not the cheapo crossfire subs some of you may be thinking. in fact they are not even built by crossfire. these are built by the owner of Fi/aa.
quick vid of 8 15" xsv2's. this hummer does 160+ on music.

Don't know if this would be optimal because I have never seen it tried in a Z. But If I were going for SPL, I would go single-tuned bandpass with pretty much all the space aft of the rear speakers.
Two different approaches:
A) Use the space between the strut brace and rear speakers for the sealed chamber and the space between the strut brace and the tail lights for the ported chamber with the port firing through the space between the back of the strut brace and the rear glass. (Amp rack on top of sealed chamber)
or
B) Reverse the ported sealed rolls, and take the ported chamber, (Now between the brace and the rear speakers) all the way up to the roof. (or as close as needed for airspace)Wall off the back half of the car. Bring the port through just above the metal that holds the rear speakers. (Now covered by your wall.) Leave room for amp rack above port and below roof line.
The "B" option would minimize the air you have to compress and with enough power and cone/port area, bring the rubber "lip" that holds the side windows in place under some serious stress.
The box would have to be built in-car of course. And the link between the two chambers would be a PITA, but it would most likely be crazy-loud. (I would go with 4 10's for fitment considerations, but a pair of 12's could probably be made to fit in this scheme)
Probably more hassle than you want to bother with, but it's an option.

that would be one hell of a project and not worth the effort imho. i would really like to do a 4th order wall though. my buddy switched from a basic wall (4 15s tuned at 32hz) doing 153db. just re building his box from the basic ported to 4th order made a huge improvement all over the frequency band. sounds louder to ear and moves more air for sure. still waiting to get it on the meter to see the real gains.
i already have 2 18" xsv2 i'm doing a wall with in my 99 civic. that car will be much louder then the 350z. i will be starting that build very soon. i may post a few pictures of that build for a few who may be interested.

Road to 150 in a Z as a daily isn't easy but can be done! I have 2x dd 9512 V0- w10 DD 6.5 and tweets. 20 sk bt20 batteries and ohio gen alt. 1 DDm4a (7000+rms) and 2 other dd amps don t remember what ones to be honest. I can hit 150db on the dash at 38 hz with TL with the driver door open.

I don't have any videos myself. A freind of mine was makeing one of my car while I was giving a demo. It was kinda funny becuase the person getting the demo jumped out of the car as fast as he could screaming F**k that. I need to get it from him
But in there defense the feeling of 150 db at a low tune like that is crazy. It feels like its stealing your breath, your throat and ears tingle and can make your vision seem somewhat blured.

Very hard in the Z there is no room to really work with. I had the rear speaker bar cut out to help increase the amount of room to work with. My fist build was 2 15" Memphis mojos walled in the z but it proved hard to get the right port. I was Very loud but proved to be a one note wonder
The new box is still a bit small after the mile long port it has but sounds great. It is a pwk box and was build with a flat response with sq in mind for a daily. One problem is that now there is so much stuff in my trunk it stoped the rear end of the car on my back wheels. I had the rear fenders cut and rolled to help. I also am sporting a Veilside wide body so the fender flares cover it up

The rear strut bar really kills it from a system stand point. I did however manage to get my box to 4.0 cubes net. Was a pain in the ***. Im gonna shoot for big numbers in my civic. This was more of doing it for the challenge. I would like to hear your system. To bad you weren't local. I will be searchin for a bigger amp and alt in the near future.
Good #'s wasn't my full intent on this build but now I'm really considering going for it. I have a box build in mind atm. The box will be in the same place and roughly same size. Only this time I want to try sub's up with a external port back going through the brace into the rear cargo area crx style. With a external port it provides me with more net space and the port can be changed. On for daily and one tuned for a pure Spl. Not sure how it will all turn out but half the fun is in trail and error, build, and rebuild
Hey MYLTWON how come you didn't choose the new FI SP4. They have 4" voice coils now and veered to daily driver. I just noticed them the other day. They have the same basket as the T3, your 18" crossover and ascendant audio sm subs. They are gangsta. Im thinking of selling my 10s for 1 - 15" but since i just built another box (completely supported) my **** hammers now so I'm content for the moment.
Hey THEGREENZ, you mentioned you have a ohio generator alternator, I do aswell. Do you know what generator you have (ford, chevy, etc.) Im wondering because i have a ford 3G and was wondering if you had the same. I also wanted to know if you have a MLA Module. If so what is your resting voltage. I have around 15 when cold and once i warm up around 14.2 ish. Before I got the MLA my resting voltage was a depressing 13.6 with my Ohio gen alt.

tuning your subs to 34 hz is the easiest way to make it harder to hit your db goal.
db cars sound like @ss.. as they do not produce max spl at low frequencies.
50-80hz midbass area almost.. i will let you google it yourselves.
I have owned several spl vehicles.. huge trucks, plastic windsheilds etc. Seemed a good idea at the time when i was younger.. in Alaska.
Just saying.
