Default Speaker Recommendation?

Hello everyone,

I have decided to change out my speakers since I'm getting a new deck. I'm going to replace the deck with a double-din Pioneer touch screen deck that puts out 14 RMS per channel.

For now, I think I want to avoid getting an amp. Any recommendations for speakers that will fit my 04 Z (Bose) that will be decent without being powered by an amp?

Whats your budget?

Look for speakers with a high efficiency (aka sensitivity) to get the most out of the low wattage.

I'm looking to spend around $60 for a pair. I'm looking for speakers that'll go well with my 4 channel amp (40 RMS per channel).

Will any 6.5's fit the front door?

I had Polk DB651's on my Accord that im looking to throw onto the Z any day now. They sound great connected to an aftermarket HU and im sure theyll sound even better with an amp.

Infinity makes decent speakers that sound OK when driven with less power. The Infinity Reference 6032si is a shallow-depth (2”) two way speaker that fits the Z’s front door.

I'm ready to get some speakers now. I just bought a 4 channel Alpine that puts 50rms per channel.

Which speakers will work in the front with little/no modification?
Which speakers will work in the rear as well?

Also, do most people not bother replacing the rear speakers? I was thinking since I have a foru channel, I'll do 2 front speakers and a sub.

^^ A common scenario if you have a single four channel amp: run your fronts off of 1 and 2, and combine 3 and 4 to power your SubW, and disconnect the two rear speakers.

Thanks for the reply. How does the sound setup sound without the rear speakers? Do you have any recommendations for the front speakers.

^^ The Z has a tight interior so you really don’t miss the rear speakers. You get more realistic sound with 2 fronts and a SubW. 2 cheap speakers immediately behind the driver and passenger seats can pollute good sound and interfere with staging.

You get the best sound with good quality component speakers in the front that you drive with an external amplifier.

There is nothing wrong with rear speakers if you install good quality speakers in this position. Quality coaxials work fine here.

Thanks man, I appreciate your help. I went ahead an ordered a set of Polk Audio db6501's for the front.

Do you think I'll have any issues with fitment? Crutchfield listed the DB6501's as "not fit" in our Z's. Supposedly, the speaker is a tenth of an inch too long. Should this pose an issue?

Dimensions for DB6501
Top-Mount Depth 2"
Bottom-Mount Depth 2-5/16"

That's because crutchfield ONLY looks at the numbers.. space them out by gutting your stocks or cutting 1/2 inch adaptors to fit. That being said, when I bought mine used, it had db6501s in it with no adaptor or anything like it on in the front doors and nothing hit or rubbed at all... The ones I have there now would if I didn't use a spacer... But they are even deeper and still dont touch a thing with the spacers installed

They fit you just have to get that universal mounting bracket they sell. Drill a few holes for the bracket itself and youre golden. Some people gut the OE speaker and use that as a bracket, but that seems half assed to me.

Here they are on my door.

Awesome, thanks fellas. My db6501's will be here this Monday. I already have the Alpine 4 channel.

Last part is deciding what to do for the rear speakers or subwoofer. I know most Z owners recommend not having any rear speakers at all. Why exactly is this? I'm thinking about putting a free-air kicker 10 inch sub (only 150rms) in the stock location then dynamatting the inside of the hole. What do you think about this route? I'm not concerned about having booming bass. I would just like the bass more to complete the sound package so I could lower the bass on the component speakers.

I’ll bet you will really like the sound.

Some owners like having sound coming from the rear speakers, while other owners prefer only component front speakers. The difference is simply a preference for different sound-staging setups. The easy way to stage the Z is no rears, and quality front components with a good SubW driven by an external amp.

The setup you describe for a SubW won’t move any air and will simply provide some low range sound. There is nothing wrong with that, and in fact is the preferred setup for many owners. Not everyone wants to “feel” the bass.
