Default Changing Diff. oil to make it work better in auto-x

The diff sucks there can be no arguement. I'm get a ton of inside wheel spin and want to see if I can make it work a little better. Has anyone changed the differential oil to something thicker? Did it improve its performance? I've never messed with a viscious diff so not sure if adding thicker oil would actually make it work better.

Sounds like you have an open-diff? Changing differential oil will have achieved nothing. The gear life may also be compromised if other than the specified grade is used.

Look to upgrading to Limited Slip Differentials in controling your undesired inside-wheel wheel spin. However, that'd disqualify you from the 'stock' class.

I have the enthusiast model with a stock viscious limited slip . It sucks. In fact I would use the word horrible to describe it. I cannot swap it for a different type because of the stock auto-x rules, therefore I'd like to try and make it work slightly better.

What I'm wondering is if our differential is sealed or if it can be opened and change the fluid changed. Without getting into how a viscious diff works, if you change the fluid to something with a different consistency it should effect how the differential responses to wheel spin.

Ian if its not sealed than it would be legal.

If noone has done it it will become a weekend experiment, but I'd rather save the pain and see what other people have done.

I agree, the stock vLSD is not the best thing for track/autoX. Unfortunately, the vLSD unit is indeed sealed.

The VLSD is sealed unit inside the diff. It simply connects the ends of the two axles together inside the spider gears. I am thinking about replacing it with a new factory unit because it seems to slip more now than when it was new. I've been told that overheating the silicone fluid in the VSLD can lower it's Ksi (shear strength) over time.

I also looked into having someone rebuild it, but no one I know can work with that kind of VLSD.

I recommend changing both the diff and tranny oil more often if you track or auto-x the car. I do a fair amount of very high speed (over 100+mph) driving. The stink and the look of the oil that came out of my diff after an oil change at 15,000 miles was amazing. I am going to revisit my tranny and diff oil change intervals (maybe every 8K to 10K miles). Now using Redline Synthetic.

It's sealed and you can't do anything about it, unfortunately. I've tried a couple types of fluid in mine, as well as the VLSD in my 240SX with no difference. A HUGE front bar and big tires are about all you can do.. and be very smooth with the throttle.
