Are we all using hubcenteric rings on our aftermarket wheels guys?

I would imagine that is a large part in helping stud life as it puts the majority of the loading on the hub rather than on the studs

Yep- SPS Parts markets a very nice, precision-made hubcentric ring.

Just wanted to resurrect this thread since I'm thinking about replacing my OEM studs during the winter season. Are there any other newer, stronger studs in the market besides the ARP studs? Anyone want to chime in with the NISMO studs. Looking for longer studs (~60mm) to be able to use spacers.

I run ARP studs on the front of my T2 car and Nismo studs on the rear and have had good luck with both. There may be something better out there, but I haven't found it yet.

I would go with the ARP studs.

I broke 7 Nismo studs in July causing me to loose a wheel on track.

Not cool.

I do know the ARP studs are 1.5mm so that means I'll have to change my lug nuts. Are the NISMO studs the same size as OEM studs at 1.25mm? This may be the detemining factor for me if I can keep the same lugnuts.

Wow! Were you driving on the track when this happened? Did you over-torque them you think?

Hey Rob,

I emailed Bob (your father?) earlier this week to give me a quote on some RPF1s. Have not heard back yet.

Yeah, I was on track. Luckily it was a low speed corner, Oak Tree at VIR.

All 5 studs snapped on the left rear causing the car to fall on the wheel. It did not separate from the car thankfully. It caused some minor body damage, chipped paint and a few dents, and some big grooves inside the rim from the brake rotor.

I had some stock studs with me, so i was able to put them in and I was back out for my next session.

I check the lugs before each session, so I don't know what happened. I loosen them and then torque them each time. Not sure if it was something with my 5mm spacer or just the studs.

Then when swapping out my track wheels before heading home, I snapped a stud on each front wheel while loosening them.

Now I have ARP's all around and I haven't had any issues.

Okay, this is another testament that if you're serious about tracking your car, ARP studs are the way to go. Glad nothing serious happened to you.

I'll check with SPL to see if they have any ARP studs in stock. I'll be in Austin this weekend so I may just drop by their store.

Yes, I have the "fear of God" instilled in me now...

I installed new Wheel Bearings (front) and ARP studs all around after reading a recent thread on wheels falling off

BTW: I am having trouble finding 12MM x 1.5 long/open ended steel lug nut...at least decently priced ones. It appears that Venders stock plenty of $200 Bling-Bling Titanium lugs, but no $50 dollar steel lugs,,,,,,,,,,,,any suggestions?

I did get some short/open ended "Gorilla" nut, but that requires a special spline tool, that is a PIA at the track..and I want to be able to just throw away a bad/stripped nut away...not have to get another set of special splined nuts

Check SummitRacing.com for steel open end lug nuts
They have their own line of reasonably priced stuff
I think I found them there before, but did not buy, so I can't say for sure (and I'm on the PDA now, so websurfing is lousy)

Where did you get your APR studs? I just contacted SPL and they have 20 in stock for ~$200. And if I do change to ARP, finding the appropriate lugnuts opens up another issue. Let us know if you find a source for these 12mm x 1.5mm long/open ended steel lug nuts.

Cool, those are long. Wonder how much of that length is actually threaded?

Four weekends, so eight track days.

I had just replaced them last winter when I did all the wheel bearings.
