Default Track Tire Setup

I am going to be tracking my car for the first time coming up in July. I have an 07 Base model with the OEM 18" wheels. My current stock tires are junk and am shopping for tires which will be my track tires primarily with occasional street use. I dont DD my car. My main question is, thinkin of going with Dunlop Star Specs, do I go with the same stock sizes 225/45/18 and 245/45/18 or do i bump it up to a wider size. OR, go square 245's. My main concern is to have a good setup to learn on. I am lowered on GF210's with Koni Yellows and SPC Camber arms. Thanks in advance!

What does "track" mean? Autocross. HPDE? 500 mile wheel-to-wheel racing?

Stock 07 wheels, 245/40 front and 255/40 rear will work great for learning how to drive.

Agreed. That or 245/40 front and 245/40 rear. Even 255/40 front and 265/40 rear.

The only prob with that is, the Star Specs only come in 245/40, 235/40... To go bigger than 245 you gotta go with a 35 sidewall. Thoughts?

245 mm all around is good, I just do not like using different size wheels. You will want to keep the same size wheels on the same axle so this defeats swapping 245 mm tires from one position to another.

Look into a different tire then, its not like you need to run that tire for spec or contingency reasons.

I'd run 245's on all 4....maybe a 255 on the rear.

I was looking at the sizes and it looks like you will need to go with a smaller diameter to get a tire with decent grip. I wouldnt worry about the diameter too much, just get something in the treadwear range of 180-200 (if you don't mind tires that will need to replaced in sooner intervals) with sizes pretty much as large as the wheels will take, 245 for the front & 255 for the rear (maybe a 265 out back).

Do you want another matching set of 8.5" rears? You could run them on the front - I'd just need your 8s in return. Then you can run 255 or 265 all around and have complete rotate-ability.

Good idea. I recall members with 17 inch wheels shopping for two 7.0 inches wheel or two 7.5 inch wheels. That way they have 4 wheels same size.

That's a good set-up. You'd have more contact patch and rotate-ability with the 2nd pair of 8.5s though.

I'd drop down a size or two and consider square stance.
