Default mine

04 dodge 3500 dually
5.9L diesel
You can find them for a good price with some patience and theyll last forever. Itll also tow a house down if you want. lol They also get pretty good fuel economy also. Especially when you get the bullydog on her. I would not buy another gas truck personally, its diesel from now on. Just from personal experience. Stay clear from the FORD 6.0L powerstrokes thats all. 7.3s are ok though.

Yes, with a bullydog chip programmed for towing. No idea of the program Id since the previous owner did it.

The 6.0 is probably the worst diesel ford has ever made. The 6.2 wasn't much better. The new 6.5 is getting good reviews but it's also still new so time will tell. The 7.3's were built by International and are bullet proof. I now have 210,000 miles on it and the only issue so far has been the o ring for the water separator valve, and was caused by the new low sulphur diesel you now have to buy.

+1 all day
We have a 2001-7.3, 2005-6.0, and (2)-5.9s at work.
The 2005 6.0 has had 10k+ repairs invested into it (150k miles currently). Problems: injectors, head gaskets, ficm, p.steering, oil cooler, egr cooler, and now possibly cracked heads. I think they are garbage. Its prob best to run it off the mountain.
7.3 has done us well (140k miles currently) no major probs.
5.9's (185k / 260k) are running strong also

I get around the 17mpg mark if im not "bullydoggin" it- towing the boat. jk, I'm pretty good on my vehicles. I've heard little about the duramax (couple injectors only). I dont think they are too bad though.

We have a Ford 2004 crew cab diesel and tow a 28' Pace trailer with cabinets, the Z car and a golf cart. No markings on truck or trailer so people don't know whats inside. Before the diesel we used a 450 cu in Suburban which was a gas hog. The diesel has it all over the Suburban and the crew cab is handy. We also use load leverlor and anti-sway. The trailer has two belly boxes, one for jack, jack stands, weights for tent, extra weight for car if needed. The other belly box is for spare radiator, oil drip pan, brake bleeder bottle and hose, and two pairs of rubber boots for rain. We carry a spare trans and differential in the back of the truck witch has a cap on it as well as at least one set of mounted tires. The back of the trailer has cargo bars that will handle 9 mounted wheels. We have been doing this for a lot of years so we're pretty organized.

I will be towing this year with my 07 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0 Diesel, it has a 7400 pound tow capacity and should work for my needs. Guess i will find out shortly, and i'm also in the market now for an open trailer.

I have a 2001 Ford F-250 Super Duty. I wanted newer, but I refused to get the 6.0 liter. 7.3 all the way. I tow an open steel trailer. I was able to get 18mpg on the way to Road America in October. In my book, that's pretty damn good. I was very happy with it. I don't really speed either. I kept it around 67-68mph the whole way. That helps out a lot.

I rode in a new 2012 F150 with the 3.5L Ecoboost engine towing a open trailer with a C4 Corvette on it for the Thunderhill 25 hour. 75 mph up and back (including the Grapevine, never slowed down) and we got 18 mpg. Amazing engine but its an expensive option.

I've had my eyes peeled for the 7.3l ford for about a year, but man it's hard to find one not beat to s__t. Mileage isn't a big deal, but most look like they were hit by the full fury of the Japan Tsunami.

I have an 05 toyota 4runner with the v8 and it has a 7,400lbs towing capacity. Does anyone know if its short wheel base would give me a problem towing my z up to zdayz on an open trailor.

You shouldn't have any problems if you load the Z on the trailer correctly and drive like a sane man. I've hauled a race car behind a 1991 Jeep Cherokee going 80 mph up I5 and only had a couple wiggles that got me a bit worried. If I was driving at 65 mph there would have been zero worries on that drive. I've also been a passenger in a Kenworth towing a 53' race trailer and about **** myself when we lost the trailer brakes heading down the Grapevine. That whole late entry, late apex thing applies to 85,000 lbs just as well as it applies to a 3,000 lbs.

I have an 07 V8 4runner that I tow my G35 with, on a featherlite. Very smooth. Agreeing with the above post, just make sure to load the car right. It's easy to get too much tongue weight, as the 4runner is pretty softly sprung. Probably will add air bags in the future.
Other than that, I am very happy with my setup.

Cummins if you go diesel, Triton V10 by gas. I've pulled loads over mountains with my dad's F350 w/V10 and it's awesome. Kept up with my buddy's chipped Dodge w/cummins pulling similar load. If you get a dually it'll be more stable at speed without as much need for bags.

Test drove an 8.1l 2500 suburban....that thing has some boogie to it. Seems to get about the same gas mileage as a V10 F250 (not too good). I like the idea of having an SUV for safely storing things overnight (open trailer).

i have a 2010 silverado base model v6 and i have towed all kinds of stuff, i tow my car on the trailer with my ruckus in the bed and all my tools and jack and spare wheels with no issues. i was worried about the v6 lacking power but i have no complaints. and i still get good gas mileage.

i have scrapped a few cars and gone across the scales weighing in at 9900 lbs and my truck alone only weighs about 5200 so i know i have no issue towing 4000 pounds
