February 27, 2012 1:01 PM — National Auto Sport Association (NASA) National Chairman Ryan Flaherty is pleased to introduce Clifton Winkleman as the inaugural Spec Z Series National Director. Clifton is excited to get to work with the many NASA Spec Z...
... competitors, Nissan, and series sponsors on continuing to develop this new class into one of the premiere spec classes in Nation.
“We are thrilled that Clifton has chosen to step in and take over the roll as Spec Z National Director”, said Jeremy Croiset, NASA Director of Sponsorship. “Spec Z has a promising future indeed with a tremendous start right out of the gates. We look forward to watching this class grow and flourish under Clifton’s leadership and feel confident he has the tools required to get the job done.”
Clifton began his racing career in the 1998 season in a 1975 Datsun 280Z. He finished third in his regional Championship with 1 win and 6 podiums. After a rough start to the 1999-2000 season he sold his 280Z and bought a 300ZX. As you can see, Nissans have always held a special place with Clifton. However, after half a season of racing his new 300ZX, he sold the car to focus on raising his family.
Winkleman didn’t stay away from the track for very long. He quickly took on the role of Safety Tech inspector for the newly formed NASA Texas region, and after only 3 events, assumed the role of Race Director. After over ten years of service, Clifton has become a mainstay in the region and is easily recognizable at any event by his signature cowboy hat. Clifton has also served as a Race Director at every NASA National Championship event and every NASA 25 hour since 2007.
While seat time has been limited since 2000, the variety of cars hasn’t been. Legends, Allison Legacy, Thunder Roadster, AI Mustang, AIX Camaro, CMC Camaro and Mustang, GTA Stock Car, Honda Challenge Civic, 944 Spec, and Spec Miata, have allowed Winkleman to continue to live out his childhood dream, including, a run at the 2009 Showroom Spec Miata National Championship.
While his passion for racing is strong, his true love in life is his family. A devoted family man happily married with two daughters you’ll often find at NASA Texas events offering support to the staff and watching racing. Clifton works for Cen-Tex Sheet Metal Fabricators in, Waco, Texas, as a designer/programmer. The company offers manufacturing support to many businesses in the Central Texas area. They also support some local racers by fabricating custom parts for racecars.

j/k, congrats, Clifton, and Z ya out there!
Hello to everyone! I'm Clifton. There's 2 ways to contact me - Clifton (at) drivenasa (dot) com or 2Five4 6fourfour Nine3ten. Feel free to contact me! But, no later than 9pm on a school night. (I have kids)
I've been lurking here since the class was announced, good information from the people that race these cars. I also saw some holes in the first rules release. There's some discussion already going on and a revised set of rules is being prepared. I look forward to this class being huge and to meeting the coolest racers in NASA.

Welcome, Clifton!
Could you brief us on some of the proposed changes? I hope that the hardware (suspension, etc) isn't up for revision as some have already bought the spec stuff. It looks like a fun class...the rules just need a little bit of tweaking me thinks.

We won't change the spec parts. We're looking at spec'ing other parts to help with reliability; bushings, diff cooler, front upper control arm, wheel bearings. Then just cleaning up some wording so that we are all clear on what is legal.

You just joined to post ads to Nissan dealerships....didn't you!
j/k.
Welcome. It's good to see another person come from the S30 cars.
One more thing to consider....dropping the front wheel weight to 18lb. It would allow the venerable 9" RPF1, which is 18.3ish. It's a subtle change that would be much appreciated.

It wouldn't surprise me if some employees of my local dealership think I own it as much time as I've spent there recently. My family has owned Nissans for decades. Looks like I'll be spending more time there now!
Welcome to the party!

THANK GOODNESS, since I've already purchased all of them! The first, local (NorCal) SpecZ race is the weekend of 3/10-11. When might we expect these changes to occur so that one can prepare appropriately?

I can't answer that. We're scheduled to talk about them this week and I hope to have something soon. For now, plan on racing under the current rules, documenting eveything, and being called on for a report.
What wheels?
