In the middle of changing led colors on my car and figured I should fix the nasty window switch panels. I'm going to use the same flat black dupli color vinyl paint but using an plastic adhesion promoter primer.

Halfway done sanding and prep of the panels.

Update:

Driver Side Windows Panel: Adhesion promoter eats the grey "primer" thats directly under the black rubber coating . So that made for great fun of sanding off the adhesion promoter. I wet sanded to 800 grit and sprayed top coat directly onto plastic out of frustration. Results are great except i didn't get some of the 220 grit scratches out, we'll see how well it holds up and refinish as necessary.

Passenger Side Panel: Used lacquer thinner soaked paper towels to remove the grey primer, and wet sanded with 220 grit sand paper. Sprayed 1 good coat of adhesion promoter, wait 5 minutes and spray 3 good coats of the dupli-color filler primer. Will wet sand with 800 grit tomorrow and spray top coat. I will be going this route when refinishing the "ping-pong", minus filler primer and sanding.

Passenger panel turned out exceptionally well. Will be redoing driver's side when time allows.

Thanks for this, just go the can from Amazon, about $7.

I'm wondering if i should just use a fine brush and touch it up rather than spraying the whole lot?

BTarb24 for President.

Thanks alot for this. I got an '06 complete dash conversion for $75 b/c the guy said it looked "unrepairable". As the scratches increase, it becomes more and more of an eye-sore. Thanks for taking the time to share.

Haha, you're welcome. Congrats on the cheap 06 dash! I actually need to find the big piece that goes around the radio cubby and gauges. Mine got a crack in the thin piece above the radio. It's about $200 for just that piece from a dealer.. a bit overpriced so i'm hoping to find one for sub $100.

I wanted to repaint the center dash as well, but in some areas the plastic is really scuffed up and the ping pong style pattern is no more. I was wondering what I should do to remove the texture completely. what grit sand paper should I use?

it comes off easier then you think, dont go to low of grit so you dont scratch into the plastic, probably even do a 600+ wet sand and it will probably come off then your close to a good finish

Thanks for this great write up. I was hesitant to r&r the cubby door and your post helped me do it. You are right. It was easy.

Now I just have to pull the damn dash again because the 08 console's gauges aren't giving me TPMS.

Thanks for this! I just spent the day doing this and it came out well! Only trouble was with the latch as I didn't have any sand paper. Ended up using a Mr Clean scrubbing pad I found in the washroom lol required extra "sanding" but it got the job done. I did multiple light coats, had no issues with botching or anything.
