Default oem brakes

how long did your oem brakes last you? i just hit 31500 miles and now the dealer told me i have to replace the front brake pads and rotors for $450+ (parts and labor). does this sound about right? this just seems strange because my previous car was a civic with 90k+ miles and i never had to change the brakes pads. i know the z needs more stopping power but that much more?

any recommendations on what i should do? i can't afford to spend too much money right now so i'm looking for the most affordable option. is $450 at the dealer a good deal? are independent shops like midas a good alternative? or should i consider aftermarket brakes? thank you in advance for the help and recommendations.

I'm not too sure about changing your rotors but my pads lasted me 30k+. I went with the StopTech Stage II kit. Awesome package for the price. Highly recommend it. It is a $600 investment but you get a lot for a great price! Do a search and you'll find a lot of info on it.

I can't tell you over the internet whether you need new brakes or not.

But if you do, I agree the stoptech stage 2 kit is well worth it... and it shouldn't cost that much to install either.

The install could be done yourself if you have any brake knowledge. If anything get a friend and some 6-packs to get it done.

I think you need to ask yourself a few questions:
Can i do brake maintance myself? or do i know someone that can help me.

its sounds like you just have brake pads that are needing replacement.

Get a jack, take the rotors off and go to an autoparts store and have them turned. buy replacement brake pads - dont go cheap here!! and reinstall them.

Where in California are you located?

I can offer you discounted parts as well as a discounted labor rate!

If you're even just a little mechanically inclined I'd say do the brakes yourself, and have the rotors turned. I haven't done the Z's brakes but I've done every car I've owned and it's a piece of cake! Here is a How to
