ABS light on
Hey guys,
My ABS light came on the other day after falling into a sink hole, luckily was I came to a complete stop before rolling in so it doesn't appear that there was any major damage...as of yet. I'm in the process of getting the code read, but by abs pump makes a noise after turning on the car, not the engine. There is no fluid as I have been monitoring it the fast few days, and the brakes are still ok although I haven't checked whether or not the abs is still coming on. Any thoughts as to whats causing the pump to make the noise?

Not sure how "lucky" you're going to feel after getting your ABS checked. You didn't mention which wheel (RF, LF, etc.) fell into the sinkhole, but wheel speed sensors can be easily damaged. Also, check wiring and brake lines to be sure they weren't stretched beyond their range by the impact. BTW- speaking from racing experience, if your ABS fault light is on, you have no ABS. Don't expect the brakes to work as usual and drive accordingly.

I figure the stealerships going to try and rape me, but so long as I can get that code read I'm hoping for the best (that being it's not a sensor which I hear is over $1000). Nonetheless, just the passenger side wheel was the only tire suspended in the sink hole. It was unable to reverse my way out because I my driver side rear didn't have enough traction.

When you turn on the ignition, the ABS goes through a self check. Haven't you ever noticed a buzzing from the front of the car about 15-30 seconds after you start it?
The dealership isn't going to rape you any worse than you deserve for carelessly driving into a pothole. The way I see it, unless you can find an independant shop that is qualified and has the diagnostic systems and can obtain the parts, you don't have a whole lot of choice anyway.
toche'. And yes there is now a buzzing sound when I turn on the ignition. I read on the maxima forums that this is the abs pump whirling without friction now. What is this self check?
I forgot, nobody reads their owner's manual. From said owners manual....
Self-test feature
The anti-lock brake system consists of electronic
sensors, electric pumps, and hydraulic solenoids
controlled by a computer. The computer has a
built-in diagnostic feature that tests the system
each time you start the engine and move the
vehicle at a low speed in forward or reverse.
When the self-test occurs, you may hear a clunk
noise and/or feel a pulsation in the brake pedal.
This is normal and is not an indication of any
malfunction. If the computer senses any malfunction,
it switches the anti-lock brake system
OFF and turns on the ABS warning light in the
dashboard. The brake system will then behave
normally, but without anti-lock assistance.
If the light comes on during the self check, or
while you are driving, you should take your
vehicle to your NISSAN dealer for repair at your
earliest convenience.
