Default What would you do? Brakes

I just purchased a 2003 350, the brakes are in need of some work, the OEM rotors probably all need to be resurfaced and definitely want to replace the pads.

rather than spend money resurfacing or replacing the OEM rotors, I would like to upgrade my brakes. This is my DD, but I would like to possibly hit some track days in the future.

I'm not ready to shell out a couple grand for some dual piston brakes, what would you do?

Ideas on some after market rotors/pads, or are there some used brake kits on the market I should look in to?

Thanks,

Nick

I don't think anybody resurfaces rotors anymore just due to the fact of how cheap you can get them.

If you don't want to dish out a grand on brakes (wish is pretty cheap for a bbk) I would look into a oem brake upgrade kit. I heard great things from the Z1Motorsports upgrade, and I can vouch for them, as they have great products and customer service.

Here is the link. $500 is pretty damn good for all 4...

I think there is/was a set of '06 or '07 brakes for sale in the classifieds here. The newer brakes are a bit of an upgrade, so that's another possibility. Unless you're tracking the car, the OEM brakes, with good pads/rotors are more than adequate.

I upgraded my 03 front brakes to the 06 two piston front brakes. It makes a nice upgrade with the rotor being about an inch bigger and your 17 or 18 inch rims fit fine. The last couple sets of pads i have had where from EBC. Blue and now Yellow pads and they are fine for the street(quiet) and do very good for autocross and more than enough for starting out on the track. The rear 06 brakes are only slightly larger ( I think a 1/4 inch dia.) so its fine to just run the 03 rear's. I think the rear pads for the 03 and 06 are even the same part number.( double check that before you order).

Akebonos and stock brembos are a good option for the budget conscious

I wouldn't bother upgrading calipers until you are ready to do it right.. if you end up liking the track then worry about saving up for better brakes. Until then just work with what you've got and purchase new rotors and pads that will get you on your way.

use any savings on a helmet or track-day fees.. or something else..

If you plan on limited track days, look into 06 and newer caliper and rotors setups. Very cheap, around $300 used on here. More serious look into OEM Brembo , that will be around $1k. If you plan to beat the car on the track, go for Wilwood , stoptech or AP kits.

Determine what your budget is and work from there.

Set of rotors will cost you roughly $300 (Centric/StopTech)
Set of pads roughly $150 (eg. Hawk HPS)
SS Lines - $90 (eg. Techna-Fit)
OEM Brembo - Calipers Only $850, Set $1100
Akebono BBK, $1500-$2100
Fluid = $30-$50 (eg. Motul)

If you're buying rotors/pads for OEM 1/2 piston or OEM brembos, look at TireRack.com for the part #, then google around to find the lowest prices.
