Default Akebono front adapter problem!

hey guys i went to install my akebonos yesterday on my 04 350z touring non brembo.

i bought the adapter kit off of ebay

my problem is this...

i installed the adapter just like this picture (from the diy install thread). now when i put the oem rotors on. the back of the rotor rubs on the bolt circled in red and will not seat fully.

any ideas? am i installing the adapter wrong? will the oem rotors not work?

thanks!

I think this may be the issue?? I don't have much experience with Akebono brake kits, but I would trust anything from ebay on my brakes..

I would've recommended CZP akebono brackets, they're really quite good and there are many good reviews on fitment etc, not sure on ebay brackets though
By OEM rotors, you do mean the akebono oem rotors right? (just making sure haha)

I had this happen with a BB kit on another car. You should get another bolt with a thiiner head OR file down the head if your're talking a mm or 2. Also...can you insert the bolt the other way around?

OEM rotors will not work - That is why you are having the problem.

You need to get rotors from a 370z (or G37) with the SPORT BRAKE OPTION

I guess I missed the fact he's using stock rotors....why would you want to do that? The bigger calipers weren't designed for those smaller rotors.
I'm not so sure that going to bigger rotors will solve his problem though...aren't they thicker than OEM 04 350Z? That would cause more interference in this situation. I think it's the size of the nut here...using wrong head size/shape.

If you compare the size of the rotors you can see that the diameter of the hat portion is also larger than OEM, which might give him the clearance needed to clear the bolt.

To me, the first step is to use the correct parts, then deal with any clearance issues afterward. But I suspect his issue will go away unless those ebay brackets are junk.

OK then..you have the correct rotor (14"). I still say try reversing the bolt if you can. I had this same problem in a kit where one of the bolts had a different Hex head shape and it wouldn't clear. I couldn't reverse it and had vendoe send me a proper shaped bolt head.

OP, do you have an actual picture of your car (I know those pics are from a thread on g35driver)? Hard to tell, otherwise, what's going on in your specific case.

Just out of curiosity, do you have a link to the eBay auction?

I have a feeling that bolt which came with your kit is too tall, which is causing the issue

You will have to post a pic of your setup for us to confirm.

That pic is directly from our DIY thread so we know it's fine he needs to post his own for us to review since he doesn't have the same caliper adaptor

Similar style does not guarantee similar fitment

I don't have a picture. Started raining so i put my OE stuff back on... reason for uploading the DIY pic as a reference.

I took a deeper look at it yesterday. the moon shaped spacer is to tall. also the bolt head is to thick.

Funny thing... my OE 350z rotors will clear the bolt, however due to the offset of the 370z 14" rotors.. causes it to hit the bolt.

yes i could grind the moon shape piece down and the head of the bolt. but im not sure how that would weaken the parts.

I decided to send the shi* ebay kit back and ordered the z1 adapter which does not utilize that stupid moon shaped piece.

Life lesson... Stop being cheep and buying ebay crap.

problem solved.

thanks for the thoughts and opinions. ill post pics this weekend with the brakes installed

Grinding down the head won't weaken it. Did you try to insert the bolt the other way..so head is on the other side?

you cant, the threads on the the black adaptor.

ditch the hex head bolt, moon spacer and replace it with a allen head. they only reason the have that MOON spacer is for the hex head bold to clear the caliper. (allen head bolts have a smaller head)

I have the adapter kit from CZP which has the hex head bolt and moon shaped spacer. I haven't installed it yet but I have enough faith in CZP to assume that this style does work when the components are sized properly. Sounds like the moon spacer in the eBay kit is the culprit and was cut too long.
