Default Buying a Used Z, What year and model?

Hello, there 19 year old college student checking into the Z boards with the full intention of purchasing a 350z, I have around $25k to spend on a Z, and I was looking at a fully louded 2003 350z track version for around $26,500, it has 8K miles, and I was wondering what you think? Should I just get a cheaper Z, something in the low 20's in a 6 speed, and then just upgrade it? Or go with the track out of the gate? I would really appreciate all the advice you guys give me, since I need to get this car in the next month, and I will be using what you guys say. Thanks ahead of time!

Fitz

Get something that was built late in the 2004 model year (they call it 2004.5). You're bound to have fewer problems.

Don't buy salvaged...there's already a big thread circulating around about salvaged cars and why they're 95% almost always a bad deal.

There are still some 2004 on dealer lots. Look at those, you can probably get them for under invoice. Just tell the dealer, "look, it's been sitting there for over a year, would you rather sell it to me under invoice or let it sit there another 6 months?"

Def buy a newer 2004. Don't buy 2003 if u can avoid it. It's not worth taking it ot the dealer.

Track is good just remember the only diff between that and the performance is brembos/spoilers.

I have an 03 Track and haven't had any real issues after 13k miles. Yes, you're less likely to have issue with a later model but don't be scared of the 03's.

I really love the Brembo's on the Track but you can get more bang for your buck with an Enthusiast model. I would recommend staying away from the Base model just because you don't get the HID headlights or LSD.

I looked at all the options available and realized I would just end up replacing most of that stuff anyway so I went with the Base model. The only option I got was the side airbags.

I do wish cruise control was available with the base model though.

03 TRACKS are pimp....40k miles and going, couple of window streaks, feathering, 5th gear grind, clicking axles, all gone after FREE repairs...& 03's have cool navi covers that slide in..

Get an 04 or later and Enthusiast or higher model.

The base isn't so bad. I have an 05 base and it has everything I could ever need. Although it would be nice to have a few upgrades like LSD, VDC, and HID's. But if you live in San Diego like me VDC wouldn't be necessary and LSD I can do without since I don't really race anymore. HID's you can always buy later. But the Enthusiast is definitely the best bang for your buck.

I have no problem getting a 4 wheel brake upgrade from project mu or stoptech, and would prefer to get something around $22-24k at the most. 04 Performance or enthusiast? I will probably go FI down the road as well.

Dunno about the Track model but my 2003 Enthusiast model with just over 24000 miles on it has been perfect.

I only had to have to the tires replaced and that was my fault cause I like the curves too much

I don`t understand all these 100& opinion based threads.. Do a little research before you buy a car. Look on Nissan`s website, and compare the models. You know what options you want in your car, don`t let anyone else decide for you because in the end, you`re paying the money.

Best of luck to you on whatever it is that you decide.

I'm in the same boat, 24-28k price range looking to buy in a few weeks, I have contemplated the '05 just because of the "chance" of alignment issues in 03-04, and I don't think it’s worth the hassle to have to split hairs with a dealer every few thousand miles. I'm more concerned about the transmission, though if the fix is just to not beat it, and avoid 2nd in the cold - I can live with that.

Have not read much about the '04.5 does this model share the redesigned front end suspension (or what ever was re-worked in '05 to fix feathering) as the '05?

Also, any high mileage '05 owners care to chime in on issues related to tranny/clutch etc?

Thanks

On a side note, in the case of the '04.5 is there anything a prospective buyer can/should do when test driving? Things to look for, feel out - etc?

Thanks again!

Also when comparing used models, u can't compare prices with trim.

B/C u may find a Track cheaper than an enthusiast or maybe a Touring cheaper than an enthusiast.....
