Ordering a Z from the dealer charges
I was thinking of getting an 08 Z. The dealer didnt have the color I wanted on the lot and would have to order 1. But then he said it would cost a couple hundred more for shipping/delivery to them (flatbed) etc.. than a car on the lot.
Is this correct? 1st time I heard of this, I can undertand if I bought a car from an out of state dealer and they are shipping it directly to me, but not if the dealer is the one ordering it. Are there charges when ordering a car thru dealer.
Anyone know?

fight the shipping charges.
i got the dealership to pay all of the dealer charges and they were like well we have to charge 100 dollars for one 3 hours away if we gotta get that one, and i was like NOPE ill go buy some where else. and they said okay.
no shipping charges.
but they got me on the documentation fee of 199... im young, i fell for that one.
but my car cost UNDER invoice. (much much under MSRP obviously)
they give away 350z's nowadays.

This really is a negotiable item. If they are swapping cars with another area dealership, they will try to get you to pick up the shipping charges. But if they really want the sale, they'll eat it.
Make sure you negotiate this up front. Read up on any number of sources on how to effectively negotiate with a dealer before you sign anything.

most of it is BS, I know they are able to give much better discounts on vehicles they have on hand b/c they already "paid" for them. To get a vehicle from another lot they have to haggle with them to give up the vehicle knowing there's a buyer ready.
If you are going to go with a FACTORY ORDER from a dealer, it shouldn't cost you any more than if you buy one off the showroom floor. Think about it: the dealer has *zero* money in the car until they order it. They're not paying interest to the bank, or flooring charges, or anything like that. When you order it, they've got your non-refundable deposit, too.
However, if they're going to DEALER TRADE for a car, which is what I think you're actually talking about here, then yes, they may need to get a little more out of you. Dealer trades do end up costing the dealers some money (they lose holdback on the vehicle they give up, in many cases) and if they have to go some distance to get your car, they have to pay some old retired guy to go get it. If they flatbed it, that's even more.
So find out what they're really going to do. A factory order is one thing; a dealer trade quite another. Dealer trades can work out just great, just make sure you have all the terms spelled out ahead of time so there are no surprises. It is not unreasonable for them to charge you a couple hundred bucks to go get a car that's some distance away, so if you've negotiated the rest of the deal down to bare-bones, don't get too cranky about the charge to bring your car to you.
Good luck.

I bought my car on 10/24/07.
My car was found in PA & needed to be flat bedded here in NY.
My cost was $400.00 but I got a $1500 rebate so I did not pay!
If your car is being flat bedded? and depending how far? easy $400.00.
If your ordering a car from Japan then you pay destination of $625 only!

Thanks for the help fellas!
Nope its not a dealer trade etc.. Ive done that before.
This is a strictly by the book factory order complete with a 15-20 day wait time and yes it should be the same price as a showroom car....hence the confusion.
But in hindsight he did say they were going to flatbed it from the dock/distribution center and not on the usual transporters, all in all yet again it looks like just another dealer trying to pull a fast one on their customers (aka bread & butter)
So if they wont budge I'll just move on to one of the other hundred dealers in california, maybe wcn?

If you order a car or buy one off the lot, the dealer is free to ask whatever he wishes. Charges can be called “shipping,” “preparation,” or “unique color” for that matter.
It doesn’t matter. Figure the maximum that you are willing to pay. Make your offer.

“Vehicle will be delivered on or before blank. If this date cannot be met, all money will be refunded in 24 hours.”
Just a note, Greg:
A genuine factory order will have more than a 15 - 20 day wait time. The order has to be processed at the dealer level, then it goes up from there, then the order "gets in line," then it moves up in line, then they build your car, then it waits for the next boat, then it comes across the ocean, then it lands in California or wherever, then it sits there, then it gets processed..... you get the idea. This all takes an awful lot longer than 20 days.
If they're going to flatbed it from the distribution center, that tells me that it's a car that's already landed on this side of the pond and has yet to be released or sold to any stateside dealer. They either know or are guessing that the car is out there, but it may not be really available yet because it's waiting for processing.
This is NOT a factory order. It just can't be.

A 350Z factory order has typically a 60-100+ day wait time.
What is likely happening is the car is inbound to another store. There are some legitimate expenses involved in transferring cars. These are made transparent to customers willing to pay profit. If you wish to deal at the dealer cost end of the spectrum, then prepare to have these expenses passed along.

davidv, I've seen you give a lot of very sound advice over the last few days.
Any chance you could built your post count with good advice rather than reviving old topics from the grave?
