I'm a 66 year old Boxster S owner considering a 350Z
"it ain't a Boxter"??? Are you trying to say that Boxster is better than the Z?? Please man, Z is better then the Boxster in every category. I have no respect for those froggy looking machines. You should buy yourself a real Porsche. No offense. But to answer your question, you should get an 05, its the one with least problems, or an 07+ if u can afford it. Try not to crash it ; )

BTW is your keyboard missing the "S" key because I can send you one from my old Commodore if you want?
My first Z had the feathering issue. A decent alignment rectified that. Other than that no problems. The new one has been fine so far.

Mine is for sale.
I usually tell people that the engine gods were looking kindly on the assembly line when mine went through. She's strong and has a lot of pep left in her. Of course, I've got less than 42k miles on her, and she's an 03. I feel that if I didn't have to sell her, she would eventually become a weekend track car. I rarely drive her anymore.

I can't find an '07 of any quality under $22k. I should know, I have been
pulling my hair out trying to get one.
Most trouble free years.
04.5-05
07+
I have 40k on my 04.5, have only had to replace fluids, brake pads, and the battery. This car just feels sturdy, and well built. I do not anticipate any issues for a long time.

uh i would never buy a used Z driven by one of these kids on the forum lol.
no lie. street racing and putting ebay mods on the car, then taking it off and saying it was never modded is a chance i would not take..
2008 Nismo should keep you happy even though its not as fast as a boxster.
Most cocky Z teens don't know that the boxster S is actually 0.5-0.7 seconds faster than a Z if driven by the same person. Sorry to say but I would own a Porsche rather than a........ Nissan... if I had a better paycheck.

This is certainly an interesting discussion. Some thoughts:
Exterior
I give the Boxster the advantage. The panels fit better (more precisely).
Interior
Both the Z and Boxster are very “Spartan,” but the Z looks cheap when comparing the interiors. But, the Boxster has a somewhat cheap looking interior as well (it’s just a little better than the Z’s). I give the Boxster a slight advantage.
Handling
There isn’t an argument here. The Boxster’s mid-engine design is a clear winner over the Z’s front engine and rear-wheel drive. Certainly installing aftermarket suspension components in the Z brings it closer to the Boxster, but the Boxster (“right out of the box’) provides a better driving experience. If you have the opportunity to drive both cars, you see this.
Transmission
I think the Boxster has a better transmission, but that is arguable. Both cars have experienced significant transmission issues that require complete replacement for a fix.
Engine
The Z has the advantage here. The Z has more torque and better performance, and its engine will live much longer than what Porsche put’s into the Boxster.
Customization and Aftermarket Products
The Z wins here. While there is a small set of aftermarket products for the Porsche Boxster, the Z enjoys a plethora of aftermarket products. A Boxster owner is limited when adding aftermarket proiducts; the Z has an extensive choice for the car’s interior, exterior, engine, and drive-train. If you want a car that you can customize, the Z is the best selection.

assuming you are staying new or 'recently used' to get a warrantee...
'06 - stay away from manual trans - engines had oil cons issues...
as others have said, you should be safe w/'07+.
Enjoy

Ignore some of the jackasses here, they have probably never got to even drive a Boxster...
Anyhow for the most part the Z's are quite reliabile... only major issues are oil consumption on some 06's, and clutch and some gear grinding issues in the manuals, but only a small percentage have had these problems and some people blame the drivers which is distinctly possible.
I think going to a Z will be a good choice... The Z Roadster is even better, very little scuttle shake and feels very close to the Coupe in terms of handling. My only dislike about the Z in general in comparrison to the Boxster is the heavy engine up front will make it understeer if you go into a corner with too much speed. The Z is a heavy car, so you need fat tires to help compensate. Don't want too much grip though then you can't drift as much.
Good luck in whatever choice you make. Another option you may consider is the Honda S2000... incredibly reliable and will handle closer to the Boxster that your used to. But it is down on torque.

This is why people say the Boxster isn't a real Porshe, its an entry-level vehicle so people can say the have a "Porshe." Same applies to Mercedes/BMW.
...BUT please continue. I really do like this car...looking for personal reviews.
Once again, I do not wish this to be a Boxster/350Z comparo...just tell me how you use your car i.e. daily driver, track, autox etc. and how it holds up.
For me it will be used all three ways, as I did the Boxster.
It will be the coupe version too.
