I can't really comment on the reliability since I pretty much just bought the car, but I had an '03 a few years back, which I liked a lot, but which had some problems that got in the way of really enjoying the car.

I did a lot of research on the '07+ before I picked mine up ('08 Enthusiast), and there really don't seem to be any, as compared to the earlier years. Perhaps the clutch slave cylinder, and from what I have read, the power steering can be overwhelmed on tight/short courses like most Autocross courses. For general day-to-day driving I don't think either of these are a problem, but might require modifications that will bump you out of the Stock classes at Autocross.

 

get a Nismo and then the handling will be just as good if not better!

Because their fix (engine replacement) is luck of the draw if it works. Also a lot of engines took quite a while before they start to consume. If a replacement takes a while to consume and you are now out of warrenty, then have fun with the $8000 bill for the new engine.

ps. I just started another oil consumption test on my 06 and this would be my second engine replacement.

I would go for 07-08 for the HR engine. Little better performace stock. Also if you are not going to mod and are going to do autox or track days, I would go with the nismo.

I use my 06Z as a daily driver 3 seasons and love it. Only porsche I have driven is an 07 Carerra 4S so I can't comment on the difference in driving experience between the 2.

My car with everything I've done to it probably ended up costing about the same or maybe slightly more then a Boxter S all said, but on the track it will make the Porsche driver remember that he's driving the girly Porsche real quick

Cool vid. But I drove a Nismo Z last year and I didn't think the ride was harsh at all, like the dude in that video suggests. It is a sports car, though. What do people expect? A floaty, disconnected ride?

About the 987 and 997. I have been on Pete's board for some time as well as looking here because like you, I do not want to end up with large repair bill and do not want to give cash to a company that will not stand behind and own up to a known design problem. You deserve more. I do love the 987S and it is enough to meet my needs such as great handling and five second or less 0-60 but for the money the Z is hard to beat. I keep coming back to the best bang for the buck which is the Z. May wait till the 2010 comes out to see if the reports are correct in the weight coming down to around 3100 and the HP increase with the 3.7. From what I have found is that the reliability in later model Z's have been good. I would and will look seriously at the Z. Love all porsches but really concerned that the engine would fail and the constant worry would make ownership less then ideal....

Couple of weeks? It'll be out in the showroom, but it won't be available to be bought till sometime next year.

 

Boxters are cool cars, just unrealiable. I pass them in my NISMO 350Z at road courses all the time. The Z can handle very good, especially the NISMO.

 

YOU are an idiot sir, you have obviously no knowledge of cars what so ever. The Z is a great car, but so is the boxster. To say the boxster is not a porsche is just dumb, most knowlegdable people know that a mid engined car is WAY more balanced then front or rear. The boxsters quality is 10 times what the Z is, sorry but your comparing plastic interior to leather interiors. Theirs alot more to a car then just how fast it goes, dont try and compare porsche quality to a Z. I have had both a Z and a carrera s, and in NO way does the Z compare, sorry guys.

 

I agree. The ride is great for the handling limits the car has.

Ofcourse not all cars are the same but: 2004 6MT VQ35DE Z, JUST recently passed 80,000 miles, 30,000+ of those miles turbocharged (current set-up at 400 bhp/ 380 tq), no tire feathering, no oil consumption, no mechanical problems. Has been a completely worry-free and totally reliable car (knocks on wood).

It was the 03's that really had the problems. Most of the 04's were fine.

 

My '04 only had 3 issues.

-Tire feathering (changing rims/tires solved that)
-Annoying rattle where drivers side windshield meets dashboard area
-Being a rock magnet on the freeway (not the car's fault)

Other than that, was a great car.
