but no. I do the waterloo-oakville commute on fridays/sundays and the KW members may see me tooling around waterloo during the week.
can you drive the car to canada and then go back to the border after 3 days to pay the taxes and all. i mean if the us owner lets you drive the car with thier plates? and also can you insure a car that not even registered under your name and its not even a canadian car yet? im asking that because well if i cant drive the car then im going to have to leave it in a garage near the border and want to have the theft insurance on it... thanks guys
The CBSA generally doesn't allow Canadians to drive a US car with American plates across the border (there are some exceptions, for example, you can own a US car and have it registered in your name in the US - see www.riv.ca). The CBSA wants to see that you are well into the process of importing a vehicle into Canada, before they let you drive it into Canada (which is why they allow temporary US plates through in conjunction with a Form 1). So you basically need to have the Form 1 in hand when you drive across the border to present the guards. If you don't have that, they won't let you through (and I've seen that happen a few times).
Your best bet is to park it at a garage while the paper work clears.
On another note, it would be interesting to see if a Canadian insurance company would insure you on an American vehicle you do not own. IMHO I highly doubt they would allow this. Typically when you insure a US car you are trying to import, the insurance company wants some proof of ownership.
