replace 03 engine with 05 track engine?
this may be a stupid question, but i'm asking it anyway because tomorrow my dealer will let me know if they are gonna rebuild or replace my long block. The question is: if they choose to replace the engine, should i request the 05 track engine and pay the difference? Is it doable? keep in mind i am considering going FI eventually. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as i'm gonna have to pose this to them tomorrow. Thanx.

A guy a know calculated all the parts neccesary to convert the 287hp engine to the 300hp and it was somewhere around 7grand, but it is always worth a shot. Before you relly get into thinking about it I would go drive an 05 track(if you can find one) and see what you think. Good luck.

So the engine assembly is actually the entire engine? If so, that doesn't seem like a bad price. I have driven a 287hp, but that was over half a year ago and I honestly can't remember. I will be gone this weekend, but when I get back I think I might be able to drive one and give you my thoughts.

Be aware that the wiring harness is completely different on the 05 vq's....they have variable timing on intake and exhaust now so the wiring harness and pin locations on the ecu have changed. You can physically see the differences between the 2 motors if you go and see the new engine at a dealer....extra sensors and associated plugs.
It won't work!!

if they replace it, fine. if they rebuild it, i'm gonna have them build up the bottom in prep for some kinda fi in the future. jason from performance recommended nismo connecting rod bolts, and i was considering nismo cams, fw/clutch. any other suggestions guys?

Guys,
I spoke with Tony at Performance Nissan today. I'm not sure that I have this completely correct, but my recollection is that he told me the following: The 2005 Track has OBD III instead of OBD II ECU technology. The OBD II ECU, heads and ports on the 2005 Track actually de-tune the car to meet new emissions. The step backwards is compensated for by the new VTC Cams and the new Lower Plenum.
My assumption (Tony did NOT state this) is that the most powerful possible combination will be a 2004 engine with a 2005 Track Lower Plenum and NISMO Cams.
My car has NISMO CAI, Cams, Headers and CBE. I'm gonna add the 2005 Track lower Plenum very soon and follow it up with a Technosquare re-flash. I might add an AAM or Motordyne plenum spacer but haven't seen any info on those spacers with the Track Lower Plenum. I will post the dyno figures.
Tony, apologies if I have any of this wrong! Thoughts/coments would be appreciated!

If your doing it for performance its the wrong way.
$6,100.00 for 13 HP?
Send me $6100 ill get your Z above way above 300 with plenty to spare...
However if nissan is replaceing yoru engine they will proably slap another 03 or 04 engine in it as they are the same.

I hope it goes well, but the dealer probably won't have the capability to do any sort of built up engine, and they most likely won't wanna play ball with putting in the 05 track engine because no one knows if it will work and could end up costing them even more money to try to make it work, give up, and put a 03-04 engine in. This is especially true since the dealer usually has their hands tied behind their backs as far as experimenting. They gotta do stuff by the books so there's no potential for lawsuits because they didn't follow standard procedure.
my 2 cents. Good luck with it all though. If anything, just getting a new regular engine will be nice - you regain all your worn miles you've used on it
