Thanks for the question. The bearings and races, and oil seals should be changed regardless of differential you choose. You would incur those costs even if you went with an ATS carbon LSD. Those items run about $100.

The stub axles, for those with the VLSD are roughly $300 list, and about $200-$250 discounted Courtesy Nissan has the lowest prices on OEM parts I have ever seen, and their service is unbelievably good....give them a call.

If we can get at least 5 people interested, we can do the Quaife for $1380 shipped. There is very little margin in these items, after shipping and CC fees.

 

It's really hard to answer this question, without testing it for compatibility. Technically, if the ring gear changes, then there is a change the LSD will not fit.

If the 3.9 gear fits in an unaltered open diff ... I don't see why it won't work with the Quaife core.

 

Sharif, thanks for the answers. Definitely you can count me in as one of the 5 for $1380 shipped. One more pesky question though. Looking at the rear final drive assembly pics I've attached from the service manual, can you point out the numbers of the extra parts that we need (bearings, races, seals)? I'm guessing 3,4,6,9,18?

If you go to a skilled mechanic/shop who has much experience with rear differentials and uses all the correct tools (i.e. bearing extractors, flange removers, etc.) ... the only thing that is not reusable and needs replaced are the 'oil seals'. The existing bearings and races could be reused (assuming they don't show signs of excessive wear).

If however, you went with Joe's 'bang bang' diff. shop ... they may brute force the bearings, races, and flanges out ... likely lead to the need for replacements.

THX, in order to remove the stock bearing, you will likely need to heat it, and then use the proper bearing extractor to remove it cleanly. My tranny guy has done a lot of differentials, and recommended we replace it, as it will likely be damaged upon removal. Best thing is to have the new bearings and races handy, so if the old one is damaged on removal, you arent stuck waiting for 4 days for parts.

 

ahh...so you would think. But the 3.9 gears also could cause conficts with aftermarket VLSD replacement units as well. Alas...I am so confused.

I have a set of Open-Diff stub Axles and Bearings For Sale if anyone needs them. Came out of my racecar at aprox 950miles (street miles) before we tore the car apart. Sitting in my Garage and would love to get rid of them.

FYI, we'll run this GB until Thurs of next week...at which point...we'll close it up..and get those diffs ordered.

 

Ok, now that I've read this in relation to the ATS unit, my guess is that once I go out and purchase all of the parts for my open diff to make the ATS LSD work, the Quaife will run almost the same price.

That being said, I was wondering if you could answer a few questions...

First, what is the maintenance on the Quaife unit vs. the ATS one?

Second, most of my driving is AutoX, and spirited back-road driving. I haven't been on a real road-course yet, and while I'd love to do it once or twice, it likely won't be a regular venue for my driving. Which unit would be better for my purposes? My Z is my daily driver (including snow), so I'm also looking for something to help traction in bad weather...the open diff just spins one wheen whel I hit a slippery spot.

Finally, where would I go for installation on either item? I'm out of my warrantee at this point, so I don't really care what the dealer sees on my car. I've installed everything so-far on my own (all minor items such as intakes, audio, and plenum spacer), but I don't think I'd be comfortable installing this myself.
