Tranny Noise
Hey guys, just bought my first Z yesterday. I had my friend with me today and we were doing some "spirited" driving. I wasn't pushing it very hard, as I am still learning the car, but it wasn't normal point A to point B driving. Anywho, I pulled into a sub division and stopped at a stop sign and heard a noise. I didn't have it in gear and the clutch was disengaged, I was just sitting there. The noise sounded like if you took a handful of bolts and threw them into the dryer and turned it on. My windows were down so I heard it from the outside so I opened my door. It was coming from the tranny area. I pushed in the clutch and the sound went away. Since then, I haven't been able to duplicate the problem. I took it to Nissan and they said since I can't get it duplicated then I should just keep driving it. The car only has 14k miles on it. I dont have any problems getting it into any gears.
Like I said, I just bought it yesterday and this is my first post. I did search on this and haven't been able to find anything that closely resembles my situation. Any ideas or info would be greatly appreciated and it is great to FINALLY OWN A Z!!!!

It's a pretty common problem. Most cars don't have it when idling, but if you turn the car off it's pretty noticible as the engine/transmission winds down.
I've noticed mine do it on a few occasions but as you've observed, it goes away when you depress the clutch.

it isn't a problem its the way the z is designed. th reason you heard it at that one place is bc the sound was deflected off of some building or wall. our trannies are loud, the problems you have heard of do with our gear syncros grinding.

Gotcha. Thanks guys I appreciate the input. The time I was referencing in the first post was pretty loud and it didn't bounce off any walls so naturally it scared the crap out of me. I did hear it last night as I turned it off. It was very light but it wasn't as "fluid" as what it normally is. Does it still chatter with a higher quality tranny fluid?
