Default VQ40DE revability

I'm looking into possibly building a VQ40 block/VQ35 heads N/A motor for my '89 S13. I know the new VQ35HR is somewhat based on the new tall deck VQ40 block design and I've been told the 4.0L bottom end is very strong.

Since it's a stroker motor I'm worried about reving it too high. I believe the stock redline on the '05 Frontier is 6000 rpm.

So in short how high can I safely rev the 100% stock VQ40 shortblock? If I follow through I'm thinking of setting the rev limiter at 6500 rpms since this is a daily driver. Thoughts?

the 40 is a longer stroke with a taller deck than the 35 IIRC so revving it won't be as free as even a regular vq35.
besides, with the right valvetrain and rods, a vq35 can be revved to 8000 or so.

my xterra has the 4.0 and the rev limiter is set to 6200k ... but thats all i can tell you about that. no plans on modding it.

Ok I guess if it's 6200 stock 6500 shouldn't push it too much. If I go with the new tall deck design I could either go with the VQ40 block or VQ35HR block. 6500 rpm vs 7500 rpm. Torque vs Revs. I could use a complete VQ35HR, throw 4.636 gears into my R200 and rev the **** out of it... still debating.

Our shop at one point look into doing a VQ40.... It's not a VQ35 stroked out. The parts are not interchabgable. heads might fit. but you might get piston slap not sure. The rods are the type as the VQ35. so I'm sot sure it will be stronger... Not sure what your overall goal is by doing a motor swap. You will be limited in the aftermarket. with a VQ40. If you are looking for RPM's for your S13. Cams some Head porting, NISMO Oil Pump is a must. And obvioulsy tuning... We have motor pkg's coming soon.

Ok thanks. I think at this point it would be smarter to wait somewhat and get the VQ35HR, for factory reliability.

On our mustang Dyno, the 2003's give us the highest stock baseline... Over all the motors so far.
