Thats what I figured. I have been noticing my tailpipes getting black and then more with test pipes installed. I have a little more than 10,000mi. on mine and my oil level is always between the L and H.

hmm how do you make an educated guess on how much oil youve lost? i hope its more than just eyeing the dip stick...

No guessing involved.

When you live watching your oil, it is pretty darn easy. I could go out there and measure the thing, but that would be overkill. My eyes are certainly good enough.

My original dealer's on the other hand, not so good at times.

I can tell you though, that the damn dipstick is a royal pain at first.

Always check it cold. First thing in the morning before starting is best.

It is certainly a crazy design.

They will also show more black soot when it has rained or is cold, the moisture from the exhaust when cold or from the rain will make it stick and look worst inside the tips.

Would blowby contradict nissan service attributing it to down shifting. And how does no EGR fit. Is it possible that oil control rings do not seal well under vacuum? I think Nissan knows what the problem is and is treating us like mushrooms just like they did with tire feathering issue. Just like politics, the coverup is often worse than the problem. Wouldn't you rather hear something from Nissan like "Nissan is addressing this issue and will make an announcement when a fix is available."

From some of the comments I have read it appears that this oil consumption can come on so fast and unexpected that cars are driven so low on oil that engine damage my occur.

SO I have just read all these posts, and am not very happy to read any of them. I have had my 07 Z with the VQ35HR, for 2 months now. I had it at the dealer for what sounded like an exhaust rattle near the engine. It actually sounds just like what people in this thread have talked about. I have 4400 miles on it and will also start monitoring my oil levels.

The dealer replaced the "mid-pipe" as they call it, or Y pipe as we call it. They feel that should have resolved the problem. NOPE not at all.

Just a side note the 07 has a much longer Y pipe than older models. The smart guys at the dealer figured that out when the wrong pipe was ordered for my car.

I hope this is not the same problem as the 06. Will monitor this daily.

If you are still having the rattle, check the oil level. The best time to do this is to let the car warm up (driving or whatever) and then let it sit for 15 minutes. Check the level and see where you are on the dipstick and let us know. It may just be an exhaust issue (my Xterra has been to the dealer 5 times for exhaust rattle .. so i know it's annoying). Why do I like Nissan again?

anybody have an 06 that DOES NOT have excessive oil consumption?

I have noticed the dealer overfills when they do my oil changes, but i do not notice any significant oil loss...never drops below the H. I have 11000km on the car now.

Sounds like you are in good shape.

I noticed that the last time I had the oil changed, the dealer overfilled mine by about 1/4 qt. Before that though, it was always filled to exactly the H.

I need to remind that not to do that if there is a next time.

My car HAS NOT consumed oil since breakin, where it consumed about 1/4 of a quart. I am currently at 6300miles and just switched to Castrol Syntec 5W-30. I check my oil once a week to make sure everything is OK.

Blackhawk, I had an 06 with bad oil consumption and now have the 07. I have the exhaust rattle it has nothing to do with oil consumption, its actually the load of the engine at low RPMs, especially noticeable when you have the A/C on. Trust me I've monitored my oil levels from day one, and now that i know the signs of massive oil consumption they are not there. Additional the rattling sound from the 06s comes from the valve-trains. It gets progressively louder the lower the oil level.

I'm very hopeful for the 07. Did you just trade-in or did you work with NNA?

Thanks for that. Its comforting to know you have had both the 06 and 07. Now we just need to get rid of that damn rattle.

Default Nissan australia court dealings

Hi there guys
My name is Jim from Sydney Australia and I have posted on this thread before. I also have an oil consumption problem and have taken Nissan Australia to court re the problem. Have already had 2 hearings and Judge has been quite good and helpful.

I am claiming for a full refund but Nissan have offered to replace my engine.

I have copied quotes from this thread with the similar problems that you guys are having but judge wants more info and this is were I need your help again.

Could you guys please write up a short letter outlining the oil consumption problems that you have had but in your letter you must state you full name, the car you drive, date and address. I know Im asking for alot but specific letters from people with the same problem is what the judge wants to see.

If you could email such a letter i would greatly appreciate it.

A big thanks to those members who have already done so.

email. jimaskounis@yahoo.com.au

Thanks
Jim

Well, my oil was down about 1/4 quart after 1500 miles on my current oil change. Now after 2200 miles it is down about 3/4 quart. 1/2 a quart in 700 miles. I will be seeing my semi-local Nissan dealership tomorrow. They said over the phone they have replaced a couple of engines for this.

My car has about 12500 miles now, and I drive it mostly highway to/from work.

It sounds like there is no solution yet from Nissan yet. I don't know why they don't try to replace the 06 engine with an 07 engine and hood, as it seems like the 07 engine isn't a notorious oil burner yet. Replacing a faulty engine with another faulty engine is, well, faulty.

Good Luck bofa.
