Default 3.9 Final Drive Install - But do I NEED An Install Kit?

I'm trying to setup a pumpkin swap for my 3.3 (from a 2005 AT 35th Anniv.) for another board members 3.5 (Twinned MT). Now my LSD only has 23K on it and his has 53K. And once I get this done I plan on getting the 3.9's installed (have to w8 till may 16 due to back-order).

Now the part that really confuses me is when I DO need to get the 3.9's installed, I've read on different websites about recommended installation kits, for example:

"The ONLY way to determine the proper size lash adjusters is during the installation by a competant installer. For those with higher mileage cars (typically over 25k miles) or who want additional peace of mind during the install, we also can offer the bearings as well as the bolts used internally (called Install Kit 2). Again, these are all genuine Nissan parts."

So basically, I'll have to bring my setup in, the tech. will evaluate everything and then tell me which install kit to purchase thus making me return a second time. OR are these 'install kits' just a handful of overpriced OEM washers, and not necessary?

I really just want to bring it in once, get the gears installed and be on my way. Is this possible?

get the install kit, it is worth while. I learned the hard way. had a incompetant installer install with nismo lsd. long story short, brought the car to a transmisison specialist and he told me the pinion shaft was only contacting 1/3 of the ring and he would need different size shims, so I had to scamble arround to look for this and majority of shops i called did not have in stock.

Central 20 3.9 Final Drive 350Z/G35

$499.00

Install Kit 1 for Central 20 Final Drive

$29.50

Install Kit 2 for Central 20 Final Drive (for cars with build date up to 01/05)

$288.00

Install Kit 2 for Central 20 Final Drive (for cars with build date after 01/05)

$288.00

I ordered install Kit 1 and for $29.50. All good. But are the install kit 2's NECESSARY? I know what the website says but c'mon, that's $288 dollars that you 'might' need. This ambiguity is driving me nutz.

if you take it to a good diff shop then they will either have all the parts in stock or be able to get whatever they need quickly.

i was worried about the exact same thing when i ordered my 3.9. I just ordered the 3.9 by itself and let the shop take care of the rest. best advice is to take it to a diff shop that has done nissans before and specialize in diffs (not all auto shops can do this install RIGHT)

call around and you should be able to find one.

good luck!

Our website is not ambiguous at all. It says very plainly that install kit 1 is mandatory to install a new or used ring and pinion. You can buy it from us, you can get the parts on your own, but one way or another, you need these parts. This "insall kit" are a combo of pieces we put together - they are not sold as 'install kits' from Nissan.

If the car has over 25k miles, or if you want to be 100% sure everything is as new, and not risk a bearing being damaged during disassembly/reassembly then get the install kit 2 as well. It includes the bearings, and seals and bolts, as spelled out on the site. Install kit 2, coupled with install kit 1, will give you ALL new internals to the rear pumpkin (exclusive of the differential, ring, pinion and pumpkin case).

Again, the ONLY things we cannot sell you are the shims, which are what spaces the ring gear and pinion gear. The reason we cannot sell you these shims, are because everyones car will be different, and Nissan offers 14 (as I recall) different shim sizes. No one can tell you what size shims you might need until your installer goes to put everything back together. Some people don't even require different shims, and can reuse their stock ones. Again, it is different for everyone, and there is no rhyme or reason to which cars will need it and which don't.
