I have a 350z Track, and my friend just recently bought a M3 SMG II. I want to know all the small mods needed, instead of a turbo to burn a M3 in the 1/4 mile. His car does 13.5 while mine does 14.0, Can u guys help me out and name some exhaust and intake's which will help boost my car into beating that foo's M3. That sucker is fast.
#2
Haha I too would like to beat the M3 and am thinking about doing it in my 300ZX. As for the 350Z....hmm probably an exhaust, some headers, an intake and ECU along with a good driver and you should be able to take him by a little if not keep up.
#3
I raced 2 different 2003 M3’s and pulled a car length until 5th (about 130mph) and let go because of traffic (without loosing any distance between cars). In both races I started from 2nd gear. My only mods are ground kit, Injen intake and no resonator. I haven’t posted this kills in this forum because some people find it hard to believe that a 350Z can take an M3 (and other cars). I don’t care if people believe me or not because I don’t gain anything by lying; but from my experience, I would race him and then take a good look at his face. The expression they always make after you beat them is unforgettable!!

I don't doubt your words, Javi....
but M3 does 0-60 in less than 5 seconds whereas ours does it in 5.5 plus. Are you beating these M3s off the line or while cruising? Need details, and I am happy to hear my Z can at least keep up with the M3s.

S4s have crappy AWD drivetrain loss.
M3s are high revers they have the most power at redline. They weight about 3600 pounds laden weight have shorter gear ratios and less torque per ton than a 350z.
Its a tough sell because the reason they get the good 0-60 times is because of the shorter gear ratios and lack or torque so they launch pretty fast if your a good driver.
Most M3 owners would get 4.9 for 0-60 and Z owners a 5.2? Power after that is a total washup because the M3's first gear ratio is 4.X vs 3.3 ish so they get a very good launch at the start but they sacrifice more higher end acceleration as a result.
Yes there engine is more sophisticated than a Zs engine so you have a good deal more power under the curve than you would expect. 333bhp and ~280 of torque with 3600 pounds with shorter gears vs 286/280 with 3200 pounds with what I would define as *good* gear ratios.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. For me its a touch choice between these two cars. On one side you have the Z which is a track beast that has limitless power and suspension potential wheras you have the M3 which is more luxurious and is faster stock in a straight line. Stack on mods and the advantage starts moving heavily in the Zs favor.
There are about 3-4 other threads on this bbs about M3s vs the G35 Coupe and the 350Z I suggest you check out all of them.
SMG adds a whole different equation to the mix. You are guaranteed perfect shifts and perfect launches ie you are 99.999% better than the drivers out there in terms of speeds of gear shifts, rev matching etc. You have choices of S1-S6 (and A1-A5) which sets the speed at which you shift at. Take a Z car with a good driver vs one with a great driver stock for stock the great driver will win every time even though the machines are exactly the same.

By the way, what does that have to do with 350Z's loosing to M3s anyways? You are absolutely right about the M3 gearing, they are spaced out wonderfully. Extremely strong pulls for a car with a most torque in the upper range. When I'm shifting the bimmer pulls up abit everytime.
Oh, Stack on mods on a M3, like some suspension work, chip, exhaust, air filter and thats about it and you can't really touch it with a Z. OK, you need a really great driver! I get it.

Stack on mods its umm expensive and pointless in the M3. Adding about 30 bhp costs you about $6-$10 grand. A full suspension setup from the likes of Dinan is mind blowing cost wise.
The only true performance upgrade I have seen for the M3 is a Supercharger kit from g-power cost is ~$25K to get you upto 520 bhp @ the crank. That leaves your stock suspension in place and adds 200 pounds.
See the point I'm getting at? Modding M3s is possible and expensive ie dollar for dollar the Z beats the M3 in every possible category except for interior quality.
Anyone can add expensive modifications for a car thats not the point. The 350Z really hauls for a car in its price range nothing even comes close to it. The motor is superbly torquey great handler as well. I like S2000s but the Vtech just does not cut it for me, you need to beat the crap out of the engine just to have some fun with it.
I ideally would choose an M3 with a full Dinan suspension upgrade a stage III supercharger from G-power. That brings me upto $88,000 and I loose my engine warranty as well thats the best part! Not exactly the smartest choice for an already stressed motor. Lets see for that money I could get a 911 C4S with a decent amount of add-ons anyone? Or even cheaper how about a Ruf 3400! A true exotic machine!
Where as the 350Z/G35 coupe. Spend about $10-$15K on the engine (read complete overhaul) to get it upto 500 rwhp or 600 to the crank, full S-tune suspension wheel package, stereo upgrades. That would have me roasting Ferraris and 911 Turbos all day long, superb suspension, stereo and power. All that would still only run me $55,000. Even if by some miracle I blow up the VQ35 its still cheaper than blowing up the M3s engine.
Granted their is the whole badge aspect of owning a BMW which I am happy to say I do not succumb to, unlike most people.
6 months from now I will either have a project G35 coupe or a stock M3.

IM going to race him while we're on the highway next time, so i can pull off on my second gear, and see if i can stick with him. He doesn't pass 140ish with his car, I was with him last time he ripped apart a pontiac ram air, from that day I knew that the M3 will be a tough car to beat, and the way he hit 140...was spectacular. The torque and high revving engine is awesome. I can't wait to pull up to him on the highway, I am sure he will take me on the quarter. Well thanks guys for your information about racing M3's, ill give yall news if i beat it. thank u.

My experience
I have an enthusiat Z, A/T with Stillen Exhaust and Injen CAI. Last week I had my first experience racing a Z3 M Roadster. I assume it was stock, giving it 315hp and weighing considerably less than the 2001-2003 M3. My guess is that the 200-300 pound weight difference more than compensates for the additional 18 hp the M3 makes.
Anyway, we are at the light and he revs his engine like he wants to show me how slow my Z is. Granted I considered this a huge insult. When I had my single turbo MKIV Supra it was all I could do to get Vipers and Z06's to race me. Now I get revs from M3's and Boxters
The light turns green and there was a nice amount of noise (laying of rubber) coming from his lane and he pulls quite a bit on me. (At least a car length) That is the most he got on me. By the time I was in third he was only half a car length a head of me and was forced to slow down so he could get in my lane to make his exit and yes he was behind me at this point in time.
Granted I lost the race. But only by half a car length. Plus if we would have made it into fourth, I think we would have been side by side. With that being said, with headers, h/f cats, ecu upgrade and plenum this M roadster or any stock M bmw, M5 included would be toast. With those mods I would expect to pay a total of $35K for this car and it should run high 12's. Regardless of reports I have yet to see a stock M5 or M3 run that at the track. No doubt a modified M will out run that figure but at double or even triple the price. The Z is by far a much better car to mod.

what m3
all i have to say is you can have your $55,000 car and i will take my $25,000 Z you better be faster for that kind of money. now let me spend $30,000 in mods to make the cost equation fair and i will smoke the doors off your precious m3.

If you feel comfortable driving your Z to it's limits (optimal shifting, VDC off) and have over 3k miles, then VERY honestly, you can win or at least come close to a win! As I have stated before, and for those of you who judge by "REAL WORLD EXPERIENCE" and not some pudgy car editors who haven't even gotten past 'break-in' (my car got up CONSIDERABLY @ 3k miles!) But let me also refer you to here: https://my350z.com/forum/showthread....0&pagenumber=1

I have my doubts about racing an M5 they have a lot more power up top ie they are a closer ratio gearbox than the short geared M3, so they would give any car a run for their money. Both the M3 and M5 have the same power per ton but there are other factors as well, gearing smg, weight etc.
