Default Qeustion about oil changes..

I recently changed my oil. After puttin new oil in and starting the car, it made a wierd noise for a second. Made, me wonder, is it bad for the car the couple of seconds after after the oil change because the oil has to recirculate and spread?

Also, there was some dirt/sand by the oil resovior, is it bad to poor oil in since some of it might go into the engine along with the new oil?

No, the oil change doesn't make any wierd noise after a change. You car would start regardless with or without oil inside normally.

The dirt and sand had to be around the hole where you poured the oil in. Unless you fill that part with oil(which no one does), dirt didn't go inside. If there was dirt inside around the hole, then yes, you dont dont want dirt in there.

After you fill your oil, you shouldn't just start the engine up completely and start running it. You should do a few cranks, maybe have it start for a second then turn it off. You keep doing this until the oil light turns off. Think of it as priming the oil - you've got to get it up out of the oil pan and into the engine.

The weird sound you heard was the engine running without oil in it for a while, which is of course not good.

ok thanks for the tips. Ill try it. but just a question, by starting it and turning it off, arent you goin through the harsh startup again? Does it help the oil priming jsut by leaving ithe key in the driving position and not starting it?

After an oil change, I just start mine up and let it idle for a minute or two, shut it off, then top it up a little (for what the new filter takes). Never had a problem. Never heard any stange noises. But then again, I never take a chance on letting dirt or foriegn objects fall into the engine.

Priming after an oil change is not needed, and serves no purpose.

If you are building a fresh engine, and about to start up a bone dry engine, then some priming is needed.

+1, there will still be oil present in the oil journals after an oil change, so no 'priming' is needed. But you'll probably want to circulate oil to the new (dry) filter, and top the oil level up accordingly. Usually takes about 1/4 qt.

Yes regardless of an oil change or not i get valve train rattle, @ least thats what i hope it is. But my vg30dett did the same thing when it started also. Seems to be a norm on nissan engines as i have heard starting rattle on more that just our engines.

That rattle on startup is actually your timing chain, and tensioners. Nissan really needs to do something about that, becuase I hear that noise more and more these days, especially as the engines get more miles on them.

I refreshed my entire timing assembly a while back, and it got rid of most of the noises. But with the beating I put on my car, its still makes a little noise on cold start.
